New Cooperative Tobacco Auction Begins SL NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster Co.) —On Wednesday, 312,000 pounds of tobacco went to auction at the first Pennsylvania Tobacco Marketing Association Cooperative here at the Orion Industrial Park. According to Jane Balmer, cooperative board president, six buyers were on hand. As of Wednesday’s auction, 560 growers were signed up In the cooperative, and seven million pounds of tobacco were committed. The bidding started out at $1.30 a pound but soon dropped, leaving growers and cooperative organizers disappointed. Many farmers rejected the offered bids. Another auction was scheduled for yesterday. Several auctions will be held each week into February.
