    New Cooperative Tobacco Auction Begins
SL
NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster Co.) —On Wednesday, 312,000 pounds of tobacco went
to auction at the first Pennsylvania Tobacco Marketing Association Cooperative here
at the Orion Industrial Park.
According to Jane Balmer, cooperative board president, six buyers were on hand.
As of Wednesday’s auction, 560 growers were signed up In the cooperative, and
seven million pounds of tobacco were committed.
The bidding started out at $1.30 a pound but soon dropped, leaving growers and
cooperative organizers disappointed. Many farmers rejected the offered bids.
Another auction was scheduled for yesterday. Several auctions will be held each
week into February.
For more information about the auction, contact Dennis Hess, manager of the co
op, at the warehouse, (717) 355-5336.
