Homemade Soap 25 pounds lard, tallow, or ham hides 5 pounds caustic soda 3 12-quart buckets of soft water Heat water to boiling in an iron kettle. Add caustic soda carefully as it will spudder. When dissolved, add fats. Boil 3 hours over low heat. Caution should be taken as it can foam and overflow. Keep cool water close by to cool mixture down if it threatens to over flow. It would burn if it comes in contact with fire. Add 1 handful of salt and mix well. Let cool well, like overnight. Cut in desired pieces.
