rate from the other ingredients. She used beeswax,
coconut oil, sweet almond oil, glycerine, and goat’s
milk. She had combined the beeswax and oils in a pan
of water until melted, added warm milk and glycerine
and beat with a mixer until cool. After it sat for awhile,
the milk separated from the other ingredients. She
would appreciate a recipe that works or ideas on how
to make the recipe she has work.

ANSWER Leona Leiby, Kutztown, wanted
instructions for making homemade soap in an iron
kettle. Thanks to Anna Mary Nolt, New Holland, send
ing the following recipe, which she has often success
fully made.
Homemade Soap
25 pounds lard, tallow, or ham hides
5 pounds caustic soda
3 12-quart buckets of soft water
Heat water to boiling in an iron kettle. Add caustic
soda carefully as it will spudder. When dissolved, add
fats. Boil 3 hours over low heat. Caution should be
taken as it can foam and overflow. Keep cool water
close by to cool mixture down if it threatens to over
flow. It would burn if it comes in contact with fire.
Add 1 handful of salt and mix well. Let cool well, like
overnight. Cut in desired pieces.
ANSWER David Martin, Schaefferstown, wrote
that to control algae in a pond, he purchased some fish
called Israeli Algae Eaters, which are a type of carp.
That was 10 years ago, and they have multiplied and
kept the pond clean. He got them at a hatchery near to
Drifting, Pa., but doesn’t remember the name or
address of the hatchery. No doubt the fish can be pur
chased through other hatcheries.
