Tests in Centre County were inoculated with the fungi causing northern leaf blight (NLB) and northern leaf spot (NLS), but only ratings for NLS were made and are given in Tables 1 and 2. Some bacterial leaf blight was observed in this zone, but the severity was minimal. Com borer damage was observed at all locations. Also, animal and bird damages were observed. Bird damage was most severe at the Lycoming County location. Interpretation of results Least significant differences (LSD) is the tool used to determine if two average values are actually different statistically. The difference between two hybrids must exceed the LSD value to be considered significantly different. Example for yield: LSD = 8.1 Bu/A; Hybrid X = 120.0 Bu/A; Hybrid Y = 105.0 Bu/A; 120.0 - 105 = 15.0 Bu/A difference. Since the difference between Hybrid X and Y (15.0 Bu/A), exceeded the LSD (8.1 Bu/A), hybrid X was higher yielding due to hybrid superiority and not simply as a result of uncontrolled environmental factors. Cooperators and locations Late medium-season hybrids were evaluated with the cooperation of the following persons: John Witmer, Dauphin County; Melvin Martin, Juniata County; William England, Blair County; Charles Dotterer, Clinton County; Dick Snyder, Lycoming County; and the university farm in Centre County. LOUIS, Mo. Com growers will debate a multitude of resolutions on a var iety of issues during the upcoming annual meeting of the National Com Growers Association (NCGA). The farmer-led organization holds its annual meeting in conjunction with Com Classic, Feb. 21-23, in San Antonio, Texas. Among the key issues farmers will tackle are the wetlands and trade policy. They will also wrestle with the issue of water quality. “The resolutions process is initiated by farmers at the grassroots level,” said NCGA President Randy Cruise, a com farmer from southcentral Nebraska. “Each com grower has the opportunity to help establish policy and direction for our association,” he said. “NCGA is built on the fundamental principle that farmers provide the leadership.” As part of the first voting delegates ses sion, com growers will hear all of the resolutions read. At the second session, they will discuss and vote on each resolu tion. Amendments to resolutions may be made from the floor by voting delegates. In addition to establishing NCGA poli cy at Com Classic, growers will partici pate in a variety of educational opportuni ties. They’ll also attend an extensive trade show and enjoy an evening of entertain ment by country music stars Crystal Gay le and Lionel Cartwright. For more information about the resolu tions process, contact your state com growers association. To register for Com Classic, call NCGA at (314) 275-9915.
