The coating, which delays ger mination of planted seed until a preset soil temperature has been reached, utilizes a new class of temperature-activated polymers invented by Landec, called Inte limers®. Landec was recently awarded a Phase II Small Busi ness Innovation Research grant by the USDA for further research into Intelimers. Inte limers form a barrier that prevents the seed from imbibing water, which begins the germination pro cess, until a preset soil tempera ture has been reached. When the proper soil tempera ture is reached, the Intelimer coat ing breaks down, allowing the seed to take in water and begin germination. The preselected temperature can be set to meet the ideal soil temperature for any given crop, for optimum germina tion and plant uniformity. Under today’s farming prac tices, growers try to plant as early as possible, which normally increases a crop’s yield potential. Early planting, however, has its m bss BULLS 47 Shown TOGO SYCAMORE INO. PARK 255 PLANE TREE DRIVE LANCASTER. It often results in “chilling” injury, which occurs when the seed germinates and imbibes water in cool soil. When this occurs, the seed can be damaged, and sometimes killed, resulting in lower crop yields and, if replanting is required, higher production costs. “Intelimers can help prevent these problems associated with early planting by activating on a preset soil temperature,” said Gus tafson President W.J. Donwen. Donwen said the cooperation between Gustafson and Landec could have a major impact on agri culture worldwide. “Intelimers hold the potential to give growers flexibility in plant- <gsj)(gsj) BBf (|SJ) (gsi) (GBj) (@) Kruegers Belle Domineer won grand champion heifer honors at the 1992 West Virginia State Fair Angus Show in Lewisburg.
