FFA Leadership Contests Held KINZERS (Lancaster Co.) The Lancaster County and Lancaster-Chcster Area Leadership contests were held at Pequea Valley High School. Leadership contests consist of parliamentary proce dure, creed contest, and the following public speaking contests —senior prepared (6-8 minutes), junior prepared (3-S minutes), extemporaneous (4-6 minutes), and conser vation (6-8 minutes). The Grassland Chapter at Garden Spot High School placed first in the parliamentary procedure contest with the Cloister FFA from Ephrata placing second. Judges for the contest were Harold Berkheiser, FFA advisor at the Cedar Crest High School and Clifford Homing of the Geh mans Feed Company in Denver and FFA alumni officer. The senior prepared public speaking contest pitted 10 speakers from five schools. Placing first was Jacy Clug ston from Manheim Central, followed by Heather Becker from Pequea Valley and Liz Hess from Manheim Central, third. Serving as judges were Marlene Amst, English teacher from Solanco High School; Gordon Hoover, FFA alumni member and dairy farmer from Gap area; and Douglas Hershberger, former FFA state president and currently a dairy farmer from the Quatryville area. First-year FFA members participated in the junior publ ic speaking contest These speeches ranged 3-5 minutes in length. Placing first from Garden Spot was Connie Zeiset with a speech entitled “Integrated Pest Management”. Placing second was Dave Parker from Penn Manor High School with a speech entitled “What the FFA Can Do For You.” Third place went to Rebecca Hertzog, also from Penn Manor, with her speech, “Go For Your Goals.” The extemporaneous public speaking contest had eight com (Turn to Pago B2S) Manor FFA Dairy Team won first place at the recent Delaware Valley College Dairy Judging Contest. He has worked with students both in the classroom and on se veral projects and activities. The Fasanos and Buffalo Val ley Shopping Center received a ci tation for supporting FFA mem bers starting livestock projects. The Center purchases FFA mem bers’ animals at the Union County West End Fair, sells them, and uses the proceeds for a livestock fund to help members with begin ning project expenses. Alan Kaler and Robert Sauers, Mifflinburg Area High School graduates, woe recognized for re ceiving the American FFA De gree, die highest achievement de gree granted by the national FFA. Senior Deanna Kuhns was re cognized as the FFA State Star Farmer, and graduate Kevin Rish el was recognized as the north central region Star Agribusiness man. Kuhns, Rishel, and senior Joshua Ruhl were honored as re cipients of the Keystone Degree, the highest achievement degree given by the Pennsylvania FFA.
