D34-Lancaster Farming Saturday, February 2,1991 Weed Control, Revised Manure Analysis Highlight Changes GREGORY W. ROTH DOUG BEEGLE Department of Agronomy, Penn State STATE COLLEGE (Centre Co.) There is a correction to some information that was pro vided late last year about applying a specific herbicide to alfalfa. Kerb herbicide may be applied to seedling alfalfa after the trifo liolate leaf stage, not 3rd trifoliol ate as stated previously. At 1 to 1.5 pounds of product per acre. Kerb effectively controls both common and mouse ear chickweed as well as several annu al grasses. Higher rates are needed for other annual broadleaves and quackgrass. Accent and Beacon in 1991 Accent and Beacon are two new sulfonylurea herbicides registered in 1990 for use in field com. They are applied postemergence and have excellent activity on a mem bers of the sorghum family such as shattercane and johnsongrass. In addition. Accent has good activity on annual grasses such as foxtail and Beacon is strong on a number of broadleaf weeds. Several label changes have occurred for Beacon in 1991. Per tinent changes include; • Do not use Beacon on sweet com or popcorn. • Do not use Beacon and Counter the same season. • For other organophosphalc (OP) insecticides (AAstar, Dyfonate, Lorsban, or Thimet) applied at time of com planting, temporary injury may occur following Bea con application. Do not use a foliar OP 10 days before or after Beacon. • Aerial applications of Beacon are not allowed. • Include nonionic surfactant (NIS) or crop oil concentrate (COC) with applications. May include liquid fertilizer (28% or 34% UAN) if desired. Do not use liquid ferlilizeras the spray carrier. .T . * 2 Sizes In Stock * 8 Cu. Ft. Use NIS, not COC or UAN if tank mixed. • Do not lank-mix with any other pesticides than listed above. • A potentially important weed in Pennsylvania added to the label: BURCUCUMBER. Although some label .changes may also occur for Accent, I have not yet received a revised copy. Potential changes should include guidelines for tank-mixing with other herbicides. Estimates of how effective Accent and Beacon are on particu lar weeds follows. The numbers represent the consensus of a num ber of weed scientists around the country (subjective rating). The corresponding letters are printed in The 1991-1992 Penn State Agro nomy Guide. With both herbi cides, information is lacking on broadleaf weed control. Keep in mind that differences can occur in level of weed control due to var ying soil types, climatic condi tions, or biotypes within the same species. It will take several years in the marketplace to “fine-tune" these two products as to their activ ity on specific weeds. Let me know which method you feel most com fortable with (numbers vs letters). Revised Extension Manure Analysis Program Manure analysis has been estab lished as an important tool in deve loping effective manure management programs for farms in Pennsylvania. Results of 9 years of manure analysis has indicated that using book values or average values for manure nutrient content may be off by up to 100 percent on any indivi dual farm. Thus, it is critical that individual manure samples be analyzed on each farm if manure management is going to be optim ized for maximum economic bene- meniiMig smog 2388 Old Leacock Rd., Gordonville, PA 17529 INTRODUCING NEW STYLE STOVES • LARGE GLASS DOORS • ENERGY EFFICIENT CUSTOM BUILT HI-PRESSURE WASHERS UKSmitt fits for the farmer and minimum impact on the environment. To help facilitate the use of manure analysis over the last 9 years, Penn Stale Cooperative Extension made arrangements with a private lab to do the analysis and made manure mailing contain ers available through the county extension offices. This program has been quite successful and Penn State has led the way in increasing the interest in manure analysis. As a result, other labs are now in the manure analys is business and the time has come to expand the program. Thus we will continue to pro vide manure mailing containers through the county extension offices, however the choice of laboratory to send the sample to will be up to the farmer. A list of labs that have expressed an interest in participating in this cooperative program is provided with each manure analysis kit. This program is being con ducted to both assist the farmer and to allow us to collect information necessary for use in developing improved manure management programs for Pennsylvania. A copy of each result will be sent to the county agent. With these results, county agents will be better able to answer questions and assist with manure management programs. The results of the analyses will also be entered into a state-wide database for summarization. No individual results will be released outside of Penn Stale without prior permission. Only results from samples sub mitted with this information sheet will be sent to the county agent and included in the database. If a far mer does not want his results to be included in this part of the program he should not use this manure analysis kit.
