BY JACK RUBLEY NEW HOLLAND - A Lititz exhibitor ended his nine-year 4-H career on top last Saturday by taking grand champion honors in the Southeast District 4-H Beef Show held at the New Holland Sales Stables. “Now I can go out a winner”, Reiff smiled, after his 1,210-pound Angus-Chianina steer took top honors in the three-county show. Reiff had also competed in the Lancaster County Baby Beef Roundup held one day earlier, where judge Erskine Cash of Penn State had placed Reiff’s grand champion steer only second in his class. “He was a little too spunky yesterday, and the judge didn’t get a chance to really feel him,” Reiff John Bowman (left) of B&R Cattle Co., and Robert Frame of Vintage Sales Stables teamed up to offer the top bid of $1.54 per pound for Jay Reiff's grand champion steer. For the first time this year, a county champion was named for each of the three counties par ticipating in district competition. Reiff’s entry was named the Lancaster County champion, and a steer shown by Mike Messick of Middletown, was named Dauphin County champion, as well as reserve grand champion of the show. “He had all he could eat this week, and I thought I had a good steer,” said Messick after his 1,285-pound Chianina-Angus steer was named the show’s number-two entry. Also named champion in this year’s Middletown Fair, Messick’s steer was a home-grown entry sired by Ideal, a Messick bull owned by his sister Patty. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Mylin Messick, Mike is a ninth-grader at Hershey High School with six years of 4-H competition already behind him. The show’s Chester County champion was also the champion of the lightweight division, exhibited by Robbie Rohrer of Nottingham. Rohrer had exhibited the District Show’s grand cham pion in 1982.
