Seed spitting contest set on Aug. 6 WILMINGTON, Del. - Nationally sanctioned watermelon seed spitting is coming to Wilmington! Monday, Aug. 6, has been proclaimed Watermelon Day in Wilmington as the Mar Del Watermelon Association and the Delaware Department of Agriculture converge on the 700 block of Market Street Mall. 20-year-old Teresa Walton of Columbia, S.C., the 1984 National Watermelon Queen and Corinne Burgess, 21, of Salisbury, MD., Mar Del Watermelon Queen will be passing out free slices of Delaware grown watermelon to passersby from 11a.m. to 2 p.m. At 12:45 p.m. both queens will demonstrate the fine art of watermelon seed spitting and a contest featuring local celebrities will follow. National Watermelon Association rules will be adhered to for the contest, which was won last year by Lt. Governor Michael Castle. For instance, no one may use their own seed. If a person ac cidentally swallows their seed prior to launch, they are issued a new one. And, denture wearers whose teeth go farther than their seed will abide by the judges decision. After the celebrity division, the contest will be opened to the public with the winner receiving a large Delaware watermelon. Watermelons are a valuable crop in Delaware, accounting for over 1000 acres. Since most are grown in Sussex County, the growers association decided to let New Castle County residents sample their product on a hot August afternoon. Last year’s Watermelon Day in Wilmington attracted hundreds of people so the Association decided to make it an annual event. Free slices of watermelon, stickers, and recipe information will be available from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. in front of Leo & Jimmy’s Deli on the Market Street Mall. Walter Melon, the Mar Del Watermelon Association’s new 7 foot tall mascot, will also make an appearance for the children.
