Wrappers have a rich chestnut brown color, are of medium weight with good stretch, and usually come from the middle of the stalk, while Fillers are heavier in body, and texture, are darker in color and come from the top of the stalk. Binders have deluxe leaves, are very thin with a silky feel and are light chestnut in color with plenty of stretch. This year, Rohrer, a branch manager for Lancaster’s Farm Credit Association, won his championships with Pennlan type, although he also grows the Penn Joy variety on his 30-acre farm. Because the weather was not as cooperative as the tobacco growers would have liked it this year, Rohrer admits to having had agent must add 25 cents to the license fee.
