Farm Show honors top family, oldest farmer FARM SHOW - Raymond Simpson, Marion Center, received the 1963 Farm Show’s Oldest Farmer Award during Secretary of Agriculture’s Night on Monday. Simpson, 82 years old, qualified for the award as the oldest farmer at the show. He was bom on his parents’ farm near Indiana, and has worked his own farm since 1936. Clyde Handwerk, the 92-year-oid winner of the 1961 award, was also in attendance at the show on its Senior Cititzen’s Day. Other awards included; The first of the awards were Farm-City awards given to Farm- City Councils from Franklin County, accepted by Paul Dalton, director of Vocational Education for Franklin County Area Vo-Tech Schools; Lebanon County, ac cepted by David Walls, executive vice-president of Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce; Mifflin County, accepted by Maxwell Hook, an area grain farmer and Russell Walters, president of the Mifflin County Savings and Loan. “This award is given in recognition of outstanding con tributions made by these counties during Farm-City Week,” said Hallowed. “This year we decided to also recognize an outstanding organization for its contributions. The winner of this first award is the Pennsylvania Farmers Association.” Accepting the award for the PFA was Carolyn Rutter, a member of the association’s state board of directors. The Senior Farmer Award is a Farm Show tradition, given each year to the oldest farmer attending the show. This winner is selected from nominations taken at the Senior Citizens Corral in the lobby Watusi cattle PENROSE, Colo. The Ankole Watusi International Registry is a new cattle breed association which is being formed. Ankole or Watusi cattle are named for the respective African tribes that have raised them for thousands of years. Known by some Americans as “African Longhorns’', these are the largest horned cattle in the world. Besides their horns, these cattle possess many good traits such as har diness, calving ease and disease resistance. An organizational meeting for this new registry will be held of the Farm Show Complex. Another Farm Show tradition, the Farm Show Family of the Year Award, was presented to the George Hunter Family of Stoneboro, Mercer County. This prestgigious award is given to a family exhibiting outstanding contributions and support to Pennsylvania agriculture and Farm Show. George and his wife Evelyn have five sons Samuel R„ Donald, Glenn, Robert and Frank; four daughters Elizabeth, Hazel, Mary and Audrey. “The famly has participated in Farm Show since 1936,” said Hallowell, “exhibiting in sheep, wool, beef cattle and poultry departments.” assn, forms during the National Western Stock Show at Denver, Colorado, this month.
