Lancaster Co, growers sweep tobacco competition
BY DEBBIE KOONTZ
FARM SHOW - Lancaster
County tobacco growers swept all
the championships in tobacco
judging competition this year at
the Farm Show, both in youth and
adult competitions.
Lancaster County’s perennial
winner, Roger Rohrer of
Georgetown Road, Ronks,
exhibited both the grand champion
Filler and Wrapper. Rohrer won
with both at last Tuesday’s county
competition, also.
Roger’s second cousin Donald
Rohrer, also from the Strasburg
area, captured second place in the
Wrapper Over 26 Inches class.
Donald had captured first in the
Binder division at the county
competition, so winning is not new
to this duo who emerge from both
the county and the Farm Show
contests continually to win top
prizes.
In the vocational competition,
Daniel White, R 1 Washington Boro,
emerged from the top Filler
position in the county competition
to win the same title at Farm
Show.
In the Wrapper division for FFA,
Nelson Dohner, son of Victor and

provisions do not apply in the cities
of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and

Troy Musser of Donerville Ed.,

both the Wrapper and Filler
competition.
Distinguishing the categories
are the leaves’ appearance and
length. Wrappers have a rich
chestnut brown color, are of
medium weight with good stretch,
and usually come from the middle
of the stalk, while Fillers are
heavier in body, and texture, are
darker in color and come from the
top of the stalk. Binders have
deluxe leaves, are very thin with a
silky feel and are light chestnut in
color with plenty of stretch.
This year, Rohrer, a branch
manager for Lancaster’s Farm
Credit Association, won his
championships with Pennlan type,
although he also grows the Penn
Joy variety on his 30-acre farm.
Because the weather was not as
cooperative as the tobacco
growers would have liked it this
year, Rohrer admits to having had
agent must add 25 cents to the
license fee.
Senior citizens age 65 and older
will pay $1.75 for spayed and
neutered dogs and 12.75 for all
other dogs. Senior citizens must
apply in person with proof of age.
Owners of guide dogs, hearing
dogs and aid dogs for the han
dicapped are not subject to license
fees, but must license their dogs.
“Applications for dog licenses
are available from Treasurers’
Offices and other authorized
agents,” Hallowed said. “When
applying for your dog license,
proof of spaying and neutering of
your dog must be presented with
your application.”
County Treasurers can only
issue dog licenses after receiving a
signed application form.
