ELVERSON - Twin Valley FFA Chapter, in cooperation with 14 local seed com dealers and an insecticide dealer, has planted a seed com test plot with 50 different varieties and comparisons of two insecticides. The test plot is located an the farm of Prank and Robert Stoltz fus, R 2 Elverson. Open to visitors, the test plot can be reached' by traveling south from Elverson on Rt. 82, turning right onto Chestnut Tree Road and then left onto Isabella Road. D.C. - An agreement that helps the Future Fanners of America do creative work in all 50 states has been renewed by U.S. Department'of' Agriculture officials and national youth leaders. The 'l2-year-old program is called “Building Our American Communities.” Under the agreement, .the USDA’s Farmers Home Ad ministration, the Future Farmers of America and' the National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association help students identify community needs and" resources and develop programs to improve the quality of life in rural com munities. The test plot was planted May 5 in cooperation with Steve Fisher, regional sales manager for FMC Corporation. FMC supplied Furadan 15G for the entire plot, which'was applied at 10 lbs. per acre. Three different rates of Furadan were applied to sections of the insecticide plot at 17.7, 13.3 and 8.9 lbs. per acre. Counter was also applied to one section at 8.9 lbs. per acre. Ail varieties and insecticide ministrator of Farmers Home Administration, said his agency provides technical assistance and advises and counsels participants in the use of federal, local and private resources needed to conduct the program. Byron Rawls, national advisor, and Scott Neasham of lowa, national president, of the Future Farmers of America, represented their organization at the signing. Layton Peters, president of the national vocational agriculture teachers represented his organization. In attendance was J. Tylee Wilson, president of R. J. Reynolds Industries of Winston- Salem, N. C., a cooperating sponsor. Projects include classroom instruction and hands-on ex perience in resolving local problems through community action. The goal is to give tomorrow’s leaders practical experience in cooperative en deavors involving private citizens, businesses and government agencies. For more information on the plots and to be included on the mailing list of results, contact the vo-ag department at Twin Valiev Threshermen’s reunion opens Aug. 18 KINZERS A parade of smoking steam traction engines, oxen drawn farm wagons and early gas farm tractors is only one of the many daily events awaiting visitors to Rough and Tumble Engineers 34th annual Old Threshermen’s Reunion Aug. 18- 21, A daily “Pageant of Threshing” reenacts methods of threshing from biblical times to near present. Hand flailing, winnowing by hand-operated fan, a horse tread operating a “groundhog” thresher, oxen power and a jump press baler are among the methods demonstrated. Elsewhere on the grounds there are water rams in operation, a steam calliope playing, a display of operating steam models and two steam powered trains which can be ridden around the grounds. A stroll across the grounds of the Rough and Tumble Engineers’ Historical Association, located along Rt. 30, 15 miles east of ] Lancaster, is a stroll back in time ' to “the good old days.” During the Threshermen’s Reunion visitors can see a dog-powered tread operate a washing machine or a com shelter, or see and smell a saw mill in operation with its circular saw belted to a steam traction engine whose boiler is fired on the scrap wood from the mill’s operation. Demonstrating craftsmen will be on hand to show the making of delicious honey, homemade ap plebutter, or combs and novelties made from annual horns. Two groups of antique collectors will be present at this year’s Reunion one with a display of antique cars and the other featuring old and operating antique trucks. Neumann joins UNIVERSITY PARK - Shannon M. Neumann has been appointed to State Cooperative Extension Service as an Extension program assistant. She is assigned to York County where she is filling a position made vacant by the recent resignation of Neil Jones. Neumann, who began her job July 15, will help develop, conduct and evaluate programs for youth and adults in dairy management and general agriculture. A native of New Richland, Minnesota, she is the daughter of Otto and Dielores Neumann. Neumann is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in animal science. York Extension Prior to being named to the York County Extension staff, Neumann was a milker at Bruce Larson's Guernsey Dairy near Claremont, Minnesota. She also has served as assistant beef and dairy superintendent at the Minnesota State Fair. While a student at the University of Minnesota, she was a member of the Intercollegiate Dairy Judging Team, the College of Agriculture Student Board, Block and Bridle Club and the National Agri- Marketing Association.
