B22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 7,1982 By LAUREL SCHAEFFER Staff Correspondent LEESPORT Members of Berks County FFA chapters met at Leesport Market and Auction, on July 28 to compete in their annual market hog show and sale, which was judged by Kenneth Brubaker, West Chester livestock auctioneer and marketing consultant. Taking grand champion honors of the market hog show was 18- year-old Scott Stoltzfus, Elverson. Stoltzfus is a 1982 graduate of Twin Valley High School and the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wilmer Stoltzfus. His champion, which later sold for $3.10 per pound to Hatfield Packing, was a 225-pound Spot- Duroc cross barrow, selected from his father’s herd of 22 sows. Reserve champion Berks FFA hog, shown by Charles Seidel, of Lenhartsville, was bought by David Newswenger of Newswenger's Luncheonette. West Snyder FFA plans program BEAVER SPRINGS - Officers and assistant officers of the West Snyder FFA Chapter for the 1982- 83 school year held their annual summer planning meeting on July 26, at the Tall Timbers Picnic Area, north of Troxelville. The purpose of the meeting was to adopt a program of work and a budget for the 1982-83 school year. A program of work, committee assignments and a budget were adopted. The program of work and budget are subject to approval of the general FFA membership at the first regular meeting of the chapter in September. The Chapter officers for the coming year are: president, MANURE PITS Stoltzfus tops Berks FFA hog show Stoltzfus has also won champion honors at' the show in previous years and placed second in both fitting and showmanship classes this year behind Nelson Beam, Elverson. Taking reserve champion honors was 15-year-old Charles Seidel, of Lenhartsville, also showing a Duroc crossbred. Seidel is a junior at Hamburg Area High School and son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Seidel. His hog was sold to David Newswenger of Newswenger’s Luncheonette on the market grounds, for $2.00 per pound. The champion hog had placed first in the heavy-medium weight class while the reserve champion was shownjo first place in light- Robert Waite; vice president, Timothy Wetzel; secretary, Jody Fry; treasurer, Ross Snook; reporter, Jody Colabine; Sentinel, Michael Troxell; chaplain, James Hassinger; and student advisor, Annette Shirey. The assistant chapter officers are vice president, Vernon Zerby; secretary, Jesse Colabine; treasurer. Bob Davis; reporter, Brian Hawk; sentinel, Dave Wagner; chaplain, Todd Reich, student advisor, David Snook. William C. Sheaffer and Stephen R. Kline, chapter FFA advisors, also attended the meeting and assisted the officers in drafting the program of work and budget. heavyweight class. Beam had shown the champion hog in 1980 and 1981. Presently, he is enrolled as a sophomore at Penn State University, studying animal production.
