BlO—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 25,1980 Lebanon Co. names Lebanon „ County 4-H named two Outstanding 4- H’ers at the County 4-H Achievement Night held Thursday, October 16 in Mount Zion. Sue Bomberger, Annville and Beth Ann Shiner, Myerstown, received the county honor, the highest awarded, based on the quality and range of their 4- H activities in the past years. The dairy herd is fed a majority of haylage and supplemented with their own feed mix. Heifers and dry cows are fed mainly hay from some of the ap proximately 423-1500-pound bales made each year. The best alfalfa is reserved for the milking cows. Almost all feeding is mechanized. Mirl-Carl Farms ships about 300,000 pounds of milk per month to Lehigh Valley Farms, and has a fat test of 3.85. “We don’t try to feed too heavy or push our cows,” Miller commented. All heifer calves are raised and once in a while one or two are purchased. Last Autumn the Millers installed a new milking parlor consisting of a double eight herring bone. Milking time usually takes four hours. All of the Miller children started milking when about six or seven years old and continued until they married. After a “leave of absence” for a while all the girls have returned and are still milking. Presently Miller’s older grandchildren are beginning to follow the tradition of their parents and like to be about at the bam during milking. Miller has a goal of milking 400 cows and presently has the capability to do so. There are seven Harvestores erected on the farm and two stave silos as well. There is approximately achievements of these 4- H’ers serves at least two purposes. “Sue and Beth Ann and their families know that their work is well-done. Also, though, recognizing 4- H’ers provides incentive, a goal, for younger members to strive for. We always keep the motto, ‘To Make the Best Better’, in mind that way.” Beth Ann and Michelle Noll, Lebanon, were named as Keystone winners in the Outstanding 4-H’er category. Their 4-H records are being considered for 220 bead of young stock on the farm. The Millers also produce enough field crops for marketing such as corn, wheat, straw and bay. Also selected and in troduced dunng the Reading Fair Awards Banquet, held at the Fleetwood Grange, here were the Outstanding 4- H Boy and Girl and Out standing FFA Boy and FHA Girl. Honored with these awards were: 4-H Girl - Cheryl Adam, 18, of Ham burg; 4-H Boy - Keith Shollenberger, 18, of Hamburg; FFA Boy - Howard Greist, 18, Honey Brook; and FHA Girl - twin sisters Linda and Michelle Schroeder, 19, of Bowmansville. Speaking before the audience gathered to honor the award winners was Assistant Director of the Secretary of Agriculture Dean Heim. Heim said he feels Secretary Hallowell is the best agriculture secretary of all time. “We are here to protect and serve you” Heim stated. “We are trying to serve you not only as farmers but as taxpayers also,” he con tinued to explain. - Heim urged the support of agricultural product promotions especially Pennsylvania produced products. He also told the audience to help change the image the consumer has of the farmer, as always in bib overalls. “It’s tune we took a stand and promoted agriculture,” he stated. slate hujioii in that category. Honor 4-H’ers and their age category: 8 year olds - Jeff Wagner, Mark Fake, and Jesse Pyles; 9 year olds - Sharon Yeakley, Jennifer AUwein, Eric Brandt; 10 year olds - Sharon Wagner, Karen Cram, Regina Roof; 11 year olds - Melanie Bow, Susan Brandt, Darrin Showers; 12 year olds - Sylvia Royer and Cindy Yeakley. Winner of the county award for Outstanding Community Service by a club was the Palmyra Cougars, who conducted a recycling effort. Honorable mention went to Annville Little Dutchmen (playground cleanup) and Rexmont Rangers (litter cleanup). Club Outstanding 4-H’ers were announced. Diane Maulfair, 4-H member, presented a plaque to John Balmer for his leadership of the Lebanon Area Fair in the past ten years. The Fair provides an opportunity for area 4-H and FFA to learn showmanship, quality workmanship, and sport smanship. Outstanding 4-H’ers A $250 college scholarship was presented to Tom Smith, member of the NoSoAnn Dairy Club. Smith is a freshman at Delaware Valley College, majoring in Dairy Husbandry. Marianne Weary presented the scholarship on behalf of People’s Bank. A humorous educational skit, “Sadie and Matilda Go Shopping,” was presented by Fawn Shoers and Diane Smith. The skit teaches consumer skills.
