The heat wave has continued from Texas to the Central Great Plains and is now spreading across the Southeast and mto the Western Com Belt with mixed effects on agriculture. In the Great Plains, short soil moisture supplies have severely limited forage production for the cattle industry, but the wheat harvest is progressing rapidly. Cotton growth has been speeded by the hot weather m the Delta region but has slowed in the dryland fields of Texas. Crops at this pomt are generally m good condition^ from lowa mto the Ohio River Valley, the Nation’s prime com and soybean region. CANADA. Scattered rainfall helped crops in Canada’s grain belt, though the southeastern and central spring wheat areas are still badly in need of additional moisture. Canada’s grain belt encompasses much of the southern portions of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. MEXICO. Showers con tinued to relieve drought conditions m northwestern Mexico where nee, soybean, and cotton crops rely heavily on irrigation. Additional moisture is needed to sustain water supplies since rainfall throughout June was well below normal. The heat wave has severely stressed crops and livestock in northern Mexico. USSR. To the north and west, however, a band of above-normal rainfall in terfered with winter gram harvesting in Moldavia and the central Ukraine. Wet weather has been a problem in much of the Ukraine throughout the spring; June rainfall was nearly three times normal over an extensive area.
