J. - Now that your vegetable garden is prepared and planted, it’s time to work on your perennials. Late June and early July is the time to move and divide iris. Clumps need dividing about every three or four years or they will become overgrown and unproductive. Tnm off the leaves to about one-third their height. Lift the clump, wash off excess soil, and cut the original clump into several smaller ones. Each should have at least one fan of leaves. Divisions having several fans of leaves will usually bloom the following year. Iris grows best in full sunlight. The Japanese and Siberian irises will tolerate shade and can be grown in moist soil. Plant the rhizome, or fleshy stem parallel with the soil surface. In heavy soil the top of the rhizome should be slightly above the ground. In light soil it may be an inch or two below the surface. Established iris that are growing well do not need fertilizer. Weaker clumps may be fed a 5-10-5 or 5-10-10 fertilizer at one half cup for six small plants. Scratch this lightly into the soil around the iris and then water thoroughly.
