The search has been set in motion because USDA restricted importation of equine breeding stock from the British Isles, France, Ireland and Australia. Young horses and geldings are not included in the ban. Known as “Contagious Equine Metritis” the disease has spread havoc among European thoroughbred breeding establishments since its discovery in 1975. In one area of England alone, in 1977, loses are estimated to be $3O million. CEM is highly contagious. A new disease, CEM is very difficult to diagnose quickly in laboratory tests. Tests must be done under modified laboratory techniques since routine culture methods previously used on mares and stallions will not detect the new diesease.
