While visitors will see corn plots looking normal, levels of the three “heavy metals” will be higher than desirable, according to Dr. Dale E. Baker, soil chemist with the Agricultural Experiment Station. Baker and associates will discuss their findings from five years of experiments. They will stress the need for an ef fective monitoring system to keep track of heavy metals Our forefathers built a rich heritage for us. Baker indicated the concentrations of cadmium are high enough in sludge from some industrial areas to pose human health hazards over the next 50 to 100 years. While nine pounds per acre are recommended for zinc in soil, common sludge increases the zinc in soil to about 200 pounds per acre when sludge is used as a source of nitrogen for three corn crops. Visitors to Ag Progress Days will learn of a testing service now available for both sewage sludge and soils treated with sludge. Baker will point out that additional research is needed to develop management systems for using sewage sludge m farm programs, especially systems for ap plying sludge to the land.
