(717) 626-6198 It begins early in the morning with silence and calm The busy world is at peace, and to step into it is a refreshing experience. There’s dew on the ground, and the air is free of dust. Even before the sun crawls over the horizon to cause spider webs to glisten like expensive jewelry in its light, the birds begin their en thusiastic chirping. Down on the pond, the frogs’ concert has been going on all night. Serenity abounds. The sights, sounds, and scents of a summer day continue as the cows amble into the barn. Their neck chains jingle and stanchions are slammed shut with an echoing sound. Moths and flies dance around the light bulbs. It's milking time Motors spring to life and the scents of feed, cows, and milk become more pronounced. Buckets clatter and milking machines pulse with a steady rhythm. As the day progresses, air movements carry the pleasant aroma of cut hay. Never have I heard a farmer complain about the smell of cut alfalfa. A job for this Summer day might be clipping the pasture. The tractor rolls along with a steady rhythm all its own, and the sickle-bar mower chatters like an excited rattlesnake. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 21. 1976 By Dieter Krieg, Editor Lightning bugs steal the aerial show, while crickets and frogs provide the background music. The huge trees on the lawn which provided areas of shade during the day, begin to appear like gigantic shadows reaching for the sky. Adding a final touch to the Summertime sight, scent and sound show is a slight breeze which rustles the leaves of the trees. It may signal the ap proach of a shower which lulls the countryside to sleep. © Dieter Krieg 1976 The grasses and weeds fall. Again there’s the pleasant smell of cut grass Billions of insects make their home here and disturbed or not they buzz and chirp loudly The smaller ones perform a juggling act with their own bodies. It’s a lively scene all brightly lighted by the warm sun. It’s a Summertime Sym phony, with the farmer having a first class seat to hear and see it all. As evening approaches and the chores are done, the countryside slowly returns to its serene state. The smell af hay lingers in the air and in the distance one might hear the pounding pistons of a tractor, or the bellowing of a cow in search of her calf. The dust by now has settled for the most part. NATIONAL PORK Producers Council® Over the last few years, the image of pork and the producer has changed. Today, producers are proud of their product.
