The revides Handbook No. 8 will be published m looseleat torm to permit frequent updating when new nutrient data become ava ilable. USDA has been collecting food at 2 P.M composition data for 80 years. However, the advent of voluntary nutritional labeling of foods by industry has accelerated the need for a more complete central source of such data. Regulations governing voluntary labeling specify, among other things, that industry list the nutritional content of its food products. These regulations, which are administered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, were published in the Federal Register March 14, 1973. FDA is cooperating . with ARS in establishing the Nutrient Data Bank Edminster said that the Canadian Government and Canadian food industries will also be contributing information to the Nutrient Data Bank.
