    Nutrient Data Bank
Begins New Phase
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture (USDA) launched a
major phase of its long-range
program to computerize detailed
information on the nutrient
composition on thousands of
foods.
The announcement was made
by T. W. Edminster, Ad
ministrator, USDA’s
Agricultural Research Service
(ARS), whose Consumer and
Food Economics Institute
already has begun collecting
nutrient data on foods in the
Nation’s food supply from the
companies that prepare and
market them. When fully com
piled, the computerized Nutrient
Data Bank will be an in
ternational repository of
analytical data on the nutrient
composition of foods and
beverage products. This

dietitians, physicians, consumers
and the food industries, ac

“The establishment of an ef
fective Nutrient Data Bank for
our food supply,” said Ed
minster, “meets one of our most
urgent national needs related to
nutrition.”
One immediate and direct use
of the Nutrient Data Bank will be
in USDA’s Agricultural Hand
book No. 8, “Composition of
Foods Raw, Processed,
Prepared,” which is currently
the country’s major source of
food composition data. The
revides Handbook No. 8 will be
published m looseleat torm to
permit frequent updating when
new nutrient data become ava
ilable.
USDA has been collecting food
at 2 P.M
composition data for 80 years.
However, the advent of voluntary
nutritional labeling of foods by
industry has accelerated the need
for a more complete central
source of such data.
Regulations governing
voluntary labeling specify,
among other things, that industry
list the nutritional content of its
food products. These regulations,
which are administered by the
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) of the Department of
Health, Education, and Welfare,
were published in the Federal
Register March 14, 1973. FDA is
cooperating . with ARS in
establishing the Nutrient Data
Bank
Edminster said that the
Canadian Government and
Canadian food industries will also
be contributing information to
the Nutrient Data Bank.
