By feeding corn silage, haylage and high moisture corn, picked at 25 percent moisture and stored in the silo, Kielfer estimates he saves $l,OOO a month on short feed. He also notes that you have no spoilage, loss from rats or contamination and the loss in the field is small. He figures the cost of building corn cribs against the first cost of the silo too. The second management prac tice that is just beginning to show up is the calf raising pro gram. The Kieffers converted their tobacco shed into a well lighted and ventilated (with a big fan) calf barn Now where once two acres of tobacco could be dampened, 45 to 60 calves are grouped according to size.
