(LF Photo) Cold Weather Has Improved Taste , Of Vegetables; Mushrooms Good Buy PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 29 The colder weather is ending the season for the more tender crops but new production in more dis tant Southern and Western areas have sprung up and it is surpris ing how many good buys in fresh fruits and vegetables are avail able this week. Among fresh fruits, apples are an outstanding good buy with prices the lowest in several years. Fairly good buys are avocados, limes, grapefruit, white seedless grapes, pears and for something different and unusual persim mons. Also cranberries. A few fresh vegetables are high paced, notably green peas and carrots in film bags, but the ma jority are good to excellent buys and include potatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, spinach and various other leafy greens, sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, celery, mushrooms, onions, radishes, tur nips, and squash. And for some thing different and a delicacy we can add artichokes While the colder weather has hurt the tender vegetables it has helped others which thrive under cool temperatures. You will find quality better now than it has been for cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spinach, various other leafy greens including col lards, turnip tops, kale, hanover salad, mustard and dandelion All of these vegetables require cooking and these vegetables tit in well with cool weather dishes While all are good buys, cauli flower and spinach are particular ly low priced this week. Most of the “flower” is now coming from Long Island which is famous for growing excellent quality and real good flavor. Mushrooms are now lower priced and very deserving of any good cook’s attention. They can add a note of luxury something all of us want at times to any meal and they can also do wond ers with the cheaper cuts of meat. Plentiful supplies of celery are still available with California fill ing in with more vojume as East ern grown gradually passes out of season. November is the most colorful month of the year and the one vegetable which is most symbolic ot Nature’s colorfulness and abundance is the squash. All colors, shapes, and sizes are now available at quite reasonable prices the sole green and yel low types are now coming from the South while the hard-shell Boston Marrow and pumpkins are from nearby areas. It is add how the eating habits of people in duf- j ferent parts of the country vary. In the more Northern state's* ATTENTION DAIRYMEN | Limestone Sand For Use | In Dairy Barns I D. M.
