Page 3 The Lion's Eye September 23,2009 Everon Campus University Professor Receives Prestigious Award By Sean O’Connor ~ Lion’s Eye Sports Editor - smo5084@psu.edu Penn State Brandywine Geol- ogy Professor Dr. Laura Guertin will be recognized as the recipient of the Bigg’s Earth and Science Teaching Award in late October at a ceremony in Portland, Oregon. The award, presented by the Geological Society of America, recog- nizes an undergraduate professor in his/ her first ten years of teaching who has made significant contributions in the fields of earth science and bringing the subject of earth science to their respective campus. Dr. Guertin has been selected for the award based on her work here on the Brandywine campus, specifically in her teaching methods for various classes and her efforts around campus to raise aware- ness of not only geology but the sciences in general. In addition to the prestige, Dr. ~ Guertin will receive a plaque, a monetary award, and a place in the Geological Hall of Fame. When asked about outside influ- ences, Dr. Guertin gave credit to her Geology mentor; Dr. Heather Macdonald. Coincidentally, Dr. Macdonald is the first person from Pennsylvania to receive the ~ Bigg’s Award. In addition to Dr. Mac- donald’s accomplishment, Dr. Guertin received assistance from other professors contributed to her application. ~ The application process for the Bigg’s Award entails a combination of many factors. It includes a one page teaching philosophy, several pages of teaching examples and methods, and let- ters of recommendation from students, professors, faculty, and even recommen- dations from the executives at University Park. The entire process took several weeks to complete. All of the work that Dr. Guer- tin and Co. put into the application was rewarded when Dr. Guertin received the news of her selection. When asked how ~ she had thought she would fare when she applied, Dr. Guertin replied, “I hon- estly never thought I had a chance. ..be competitive, but never actually win (the award).” Her achievement in receiving such a prestigious award is a reflection not only of the Brandywine campus, but Penn State University as a whole. The university boasts the seventh ranked geol- ogy program nationally, with a number three ranking in earth sciences (take that football team). Dr. Guertin’s success is an example of devoted hard work, quality teaching, and scholarly studying finally Photo courtesy Dr. Laura Guertin’s blog: and students on campus, all of whom being appreciated. http://www.personal.psu.edu/uxg3/blogs/guertin/ SBudy Abroad sith Penn State By Kionna Lipscomb -Lion 5 Eye Entertainment Editor - kzl122@psu.edu Imagine having dinner at the Eiffel tow- er—three levels above the sky.
