By Chris Dilenno Lions Eye Staff Writer cad5241@psu.edu Directed by Peter Sollett and based on the novel by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist is about a hopeless romantic named Nick (Michael Cera) who has just recently been dumped (on his birthday, no less) by his girlfriend Tris (Alexis Dziena). Nick, in his heartache, makes mix CDs for his lost love which she usual- § ly tosses away, only to-be picked up by an acquaintance of hers named Norah (Kat Dennings) who falls in love with these CDs without even knowing Nick. One night Nick’s band, “The Jerk Offs”, are playing a show that both Norah and Tris have shown up to and Norah asks Nick to act as her boyfriend for 5 minutes. This, along with a search for their favorite band, “Where’s Fluffy?”, and taking care of No- rah’s drunk friend Caroline (Ari Graynor), sends them all on a wild ride into the streets of New York while Tris tries to get Nick back and Norah tries to show him that there are better things out there than his psychotic ex- girlfriend. : The strong point of this movie is in the soundtrack which includes tracks from both popular and obscure bands. The story itself is somewhat compelling and relatable to the cliché teenage romance but it also moves very slowly, just like WORD SEARCH The Lion’s Eye “Nic Ka. NORAH'S INFINITE PLAYLIST TRS CCIORER. The humor is easily lost in translation due to the dull dialogue and mediocre acting. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist may have been a good attempt at a romantic comedy for young people but if you’re looking for a movie that will entertain in more than just simple ‘ways then this is one playlist you should probably skip from beginning to end. |v A MFP | RE Z OMB | EB LN RETNALORCAJIYTOD ~bB CC BMW GRAY EY A .E OAK COFFE NN DOA WwW MN M HO NC. In fact movies that were terrible (Batman Forever) had amazing sound- tracks but one of the finest soundtrack accomplishments came in the form of the Kevin Smith indie debut. If we needed to make a time capsule to represent the year 1994 and we could only put one CD in it. The Clerks Soundtrack is the pick of the day. It cov- ers your grunge (Got Me Wrong — Alice In Chains), alternative (Cant Even Tell — Soul Asylum), and punk (Chewbacca — Supernova). Mr. Smith also takes a note from Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs soundtrack by mixing in pieces of film dialogue throughout the soundtrack. The film Clerks depicts a gritty, black & white view of the boring lives of a retail clerk. Not a lot happens in the movie and it’s completely driven by the compel- ling dialogue between the characters. Both of the main characters are miserable, the camera is constantly static and everything about the movie is delightfully simple. All of these attributes are clear through- out the soundtrack. You have the angry, miserable sounds of Bad Religion and The Lion’s Eye iPod List Fhe pl Logit Toten They {ike You. 3 wy Rome Boke wi Bn wer do neden gully The movie that defined the slacker : generation. (photo courtesy of Miramax Pictures) Girls Against Boys. On the other hand you have the static and simple sounds of bands like Love Amongst Freaks and The Jesus Lizard whose tracks sound like they were recorded in someone’s bedroom. It’s a pretty well known fact that getting song licenses for the soundtrack cost more than the entire movie did, and it was worth every dollar. If you want to pop on some- thing and just remember how amazing 90’s music truly was, this is the perfect addition to your CD rack.
