Page 11 The Lion's Eye October 22 2008 Book Review: By Christina Furia Lion's Eye Staff Writer cmf269@psu.edu So the time has come to review the third installment of the Twilight series and my favorite novel of the series as a whole. Eclipse begins with a number of unsolved murders tak- ing place in Seattle. Edward fears for Bella’s safety during this time because his sister Alice has a vision that the vampire Victoria is on the loose in town hunting Bella. In the meantime, Bella misses her best friend Jacob, who oddly enough is a werewolf. Not so great for Bella because vampires and werewolves are by | nature mortal enemies. So we have a human Bella, stuck between a rock and a hard place, wanting to please her boyfriend who wants to keep her safe along with wanting to please her best friend who wants to spend more time with her. You may be wondering, what does she do? Well, she finds a way to have both, for a little while at least. Edward realizes that Jacob and his friends are no threat to Bella and allows her to see him as long as she keeps a phone with her at all times. While Bella wants to spend more time with Jacob, who is completely and utterly in love with her, she is also trying to get closer to Edward on a more intimate level than they were previously or. Since Edward is a vampire, this proves very difficult because he has an almost marble frame that could crush Bella’s human frame in an instant and our brooding hero cannot stand to hurt Bella for anything in the world. But Edward real- izes how important the experience to make love to him while still in her human form is to Bella. She wants to have that one last human experience with Edward before she allows him to make her immortal. So he agrees that they will try once they are married, and Bella accepts his proposal, realizing that anything is worth having an eternity with Edward, even having to wait a little longer to have ALL of him. While all of Bella’s hormones and desires are pretty much all she can think about at times, it is not the only thing going on in her world. The Cullen’s find out that the murders in Seattle are being committed by Victoria and a group of new born vampires who are bloodthirsty, and so they join forces with a most unlikely force, the werewolves, to stack the odds in their favor. In the process of camping out in preparation for the fight, Jacob overhears that Bella and Edward are engaged to be married. This puts him in agonizing pain and he threatens to join the fight and die if he has to be because Bella does not love him back and he has nothing to live for. Jacob is set on this decision, but Bella will not let him go, so he gives her an ulti- matum to stop him in joining the fight. What is this ultimatum? Well, it is probably the climax and my favorite part of the book. The choice Bella has to make between Edward, the love of her life, and Jacob, her best friend who mended her heart so many times and refuses to stop loving her. Does Jacob join the fight and get himself killed? Does Bella pick Jacob over Edward? Do Victoria and her pack of newborns get destroyed? Well...I refuse to spoil this one, and trust me, it is better for your reading experience that I don’t. It is THAT good. So pick up your copy of Eclipse to fill in the blanks and so that you ‘can be all caught up to read the final book of the series, Breaking Dawn.
