May 1, 1998 Banquet Honors Top Delco Athletes’ Achievements By Mary Doolittle The annual Sports Banquet to honor the athletes of the campus will be held May 3 at 1:00 p.m. at the Media Inn. Among the honorees are the fine students who sacrificed long hours, their bodies, and the occasional class to represent the campus in intercollegiate athletics. These varsity “It is really satisfying to see so many athletes do well on and off the courts.” sports include soccer, tennis, men’s baseball, men and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball. Participants in club sports will also be honored, including men’s volleyball and lacrosse. Also to be honored are those who used their precious common hour to play intramurals. The participants in each sport will be honored with custom T- shirts. Special awards include Student Athlete awards, which go to athletes whose GPA is 3.0 or above; the Outstanding Achievement in Intercollegiate Athletics Award, and the prestigious Jimmy King Award, which Student Athletic Association President Vince Screni received last year. “Tt is really satisfying to see so many of our athletes do well on and off the courts,” remarked Athletic Director Tiz Griffith. “After all, they are here for their education and the sports are here for enjoyment and friendly competition.” The Outstanding Achievement in Intercollegiate Athletics will be given to athletes who excelled in their respective sports, including Seth Brunner, Bonnie Bracken, Kate Donaldson, Mary Doolittle, Kevin Dorrian, Tom Dwyer, Mark Eisele, Chris Eggleston, Tom Forbes, Randy Navickas, Kate Porter, Mark Quinlan, Steven Spinosa, and Bao Tran. Most of these athletes also received recognition in their conferences as well. The Jimmy King Award is given in honor of the late Jimmy King, a Delco athlete who died in a car accident. A scholarship award, it is one of the most highly prized awards given. Spor sand. Ice Hockey Upbeat Team Wraps Up Tough Inaugural Season By James Conroy The Penn State Delco men’s Ice Hockey Team ended their inaugural season with a bang on April 17. Playing their final game against the Temple Owls in front of a crowd at the Corestates Center before the second game of the Philadelphia Phantoms’ first round AHL playoff. After beating the Owls earlier in the season, the PSU Hitmen were out for more blood. However, the team lost more than just the game; they lost winger Mike Kida to a broken ankle in the first period. But, if you're going to have a season ending injury, it might as well be in the last game. The team is pleased with their effort this year. They meshed well at the end of the year and played like a team. The fact that they were only in their first season didn’t stop them from taking on some tough opposition and playing well against them. Penn State Delco showed that they were capable of handling a ice hockey team this season, and the expectation is that the team will continue next year. The timing was just right for the team to come together this year. Ice hockey is at an all time high in popularity and a new state-of- the-art facility just opened in nearby Aston, giving the team a perfect place to play and to practice. : Students interested in playing for. next year’s team should see a member of the current Hitmen or wait for next year. Flyers will no doubt be posted. The Hitmen are another root in the growing Penn State Delco campus, and it seems as if they are planted firmly. Talented Tennis Team Tees Off Big Season By Rob Coyle Sampras...Chang...Becker, names that invoke fear in the hearts of opponents around the professional tennis circuit. Well, we here at PSU have our own tremendous trio, and they are Rudia, Liu, and McCall, and opponents are running scared. The Delco tennis team has begun its season 2 - 0, and hopes of a league Varsity tennis players work on their swings. title are growing match by match, point by point. “Our men’s singles and doubles teams are our strengths this year,” commented team captain Joe McCall. “But our women’s team will play a huge factor in our effort to win the league.” The team is deep and talented, and a league title is the only goal. “ We plan on winning the whole league,” reiterates McCall.
