Get Crafty at Adult Student Fall Fair 97 By Ryan Boldosser The Adult Student Organization on Delco’s campus is hosting an indoor Craft Show on Sunday, November 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gym. The Adult Student Organization has been sponsoring this craft show since 1995 in order to raise more money for the Delco student scholarships they fund. To date they have raised about $15,000 through various fundraisers and pretzel sales. All full-time students on campus with a 3.0 GPA who are involved in campus Or community services are eligible for the scholarship. The craft show will include approximately one hundred craftspeople who will be selling their craftwork throughout the day. Professor University Park, Pa. — Dr. James Pawelczyk, an assistant professor in Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development, has ; been chosen to be a payload specialist aboard the U.S. Space Shuttle next year — and he wants your help. Pawelczyk, assistant professor of physiology and kinesiology, is the first Penn State faculty member ever selected to go to space aboard the Shuttle. When he blasts off in the Space Shuttle Columbia on April 2, 1998, he will carry a Penn State item along with him in the Official Flight Kit. He wants student input on what that item should be. NASA allows only certain kinds of items in the Official Flight Kit for safety reasons. The allowed types of items include: flags, banners, emblems, decals, scals, patches, small medals or medallions, anything made of cloth, and anything made of paper (as long as it can be folded). The items will be hermetically scaled and will not be opened in-flight. After the flight, the item will be returned for display. Students at all Penn State campuses are eligible to make suggestions. Suggestions received prior to Dec. 1, 1997 will be reviewed by Dr. Graham Spanier, Penn State President, and NASA to determine suitability for spaceflight. suggestion via e-mail to Shuttle Flight Kit at np3@psu.edu; campus mail at Shuttle Flight Kit, 312 Old Main; or U.S. Mail, Shuttle Flight Kit, 312 Old Main, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa. 16801. The items can relate solely to Penn State or to Penn State and some aspect of the Shuttle mission. Pawelczyk is one of two primary payload specialists on the Neurolab mission, designated STS-90. The other is Dr. Jay C. Buckey, an associate professor of Send your Diversity Update Going Above and Beyond By Aaron Mixson Beyond Bridge is a new program in the making at Penn State Delco campus. It is an extension of the Summer Bridge program for students of color, designed to give students a stronger grasp on college life and instill leadership skills. “It was pretty good; it helped me to get adjusted to college,” Kano Vuonge, 1st semester DUS student commented on the summer program. Nasir Neal, 2nd semester Liberal Arts student added, “It’s a good program; you get to know a lot of people and it made it easy to make the transition ~ from high school to college.” The program is looking forward to establishing a scholarly fraternity. Students involved will be sharing in orientations and speaking engagements, recruiting students, and teaching in the Summer Bridge program. Former Bridge students interested in Beyond Bridge should contact Lorreta Ramsey in room 213 Commons. * Local Transfer Program (Continued from page 1) - distribute brochures about their respective schools. For students interested in the medical field, representatives from Johns Hopkins and Thomas Jefferson Universities will also have tables. Raquel Arredondo, Student Services Specialist at Delco, explained the important function of the transfer program. “This program creates a good working relationship with area colleges. By partnering with neighboring colleges and universities, we work together to help our students.” For students definitely headed for Main Campus, a special transfer program will be held in the Lion’s Den medicine at Dartmouth Medical School who served as an alternate on the second Spacelab Life Sciences mission. Payload specialists conduct experiments in space on behalf of ground based investigator teams. Neurolab, a 16-day mission, is dedicated to research on the nervous system and behavior. Its goal is to increase the understanding of the mechanisms responsible for neural and behavioral changes in space. Pawelczyk has studied irregularities in blood pressure control associated with deconditioning. Many astronauts experience problems with blood pressure after returning from a flight, and some crew members have reported bouts of dizziness and unsteadiness “Pawelczyk will be the first faculty member and the fourth Penn State graduate to fly aboard the Shuttle.” for several hours after returning to Earth. To determine the cause of these changes, some of the experiments to be conducted aboard - Neurolab will use the astronauts - themselves as subjects. Pawelczyk will be the first faculty member and the fourth Penn State graduate to fly aboard the shuttle. Penn State alumni who have flown aboard the Shuttle include Guion Bluford, 1964 graduate who flew on Challenger in 1983; Paul Weitz (1954) who also flew on Challenger in 1983; and Robert Cenker (1970, 1973g) who was a payload specialist on Columbia in 1987. Pawelczyk earned his master’s degree in physiology at Penn State in 1985. Some of the items previously flown by Penn Staters aboard the Shuttle and now housed in the collections of the Penn State Room in Pattee on November 18 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., and again from 5:00 until 6:00 pm. These programs are for any, students who wish to transfer to University Park in the spring or fall semesters. And overview of off- campus housing, UP general information, housing contracts, what to expect, and useful phone numbers will be discussed. “This program is really helpful,” says Mike Walker (2nd DUS), “Most people don’t know the first thing about transferring.” Whether their destination is Happy Valley or somewhere on U.S. Route 3, Delco students will have all their questions answered in the coming weeks. Blasts Off Into Space Library include: photographs, a flag, flight patches and bumper stickers. An open letter to the Penn State student community: On April 2, 1998 the Space Shuttle Columbia will carry the Neurolab payload to low-earth orbit, marking the 90th flight in the Space Shuttle Program. While on leave from my teaching and research in Penn State’s College of Health and Human Development, I will participate in this mission as a Payload Specialist Astronaut. It is an unique honor to represent the University in this way. To celebrate this event, Dr. Spanier and I have discussed what item I might borrow from the University to represent Penn State in space. Our conversations led us to the conclusion that this item should represent the spirit of Penn State, and that spirit is best portrayed by you, the students. We wish to invite you to participate in the selection of an item for the STS-90 Official Flight Kit. What is it that you think best represents our University? Ten years from now, what would you care to display to family and friends, knowing that it had flown in space? You can do your part by submitting your suggestions to Shuttle Flight Kit at np3@psu.edu or Shuttle Flight Kit, 312 Old Main, Penn ; State, University Park, PA 16801. Suggestions received prior to December 1, 1997 will be reviewed by Dr. Spanier, and NASA to determine suitability for spaceflight. After the flight, the item will be returned to Penn State for all of you to enjoy. Please take advantage of this special opportunity to represent our University. Sincerely, Jim Pawelczyk, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of Physiology and Kinesiology
