Today, that phrase doesn’t just pertain to the masculine gender; it includes everyone, especially when the food is free. : The Black Student League recently had their first ‘Soul Food Friday’. The dishes included fried chicken, ham, and macaroni and cheese. The entrees may sound “American” or like something you eat everyday, and that is the main idea of the festival said Kittera Moore, president of the BSL is pushing. “Soul Food Friday shows what we are about,” Moore said. “It also shows that we are not any different than anyone else.” The Multicultural Club is also trying to advance the same message with a Food Festival on November 5. The dishes come from different cultures, from North Africa to Eastern Europe. “It’s a celebration of diversity,” president of the club Yanina Kulchitskaya said. In addition, the Asian American Student Caucus is having a food festival on October Tuesday 21. “We are trying to emphasize that Penn State Delco campus is a culturally diverse and welcoming environment,” Ajay Nair advisor of the AASC said. The festival will be at 11:30 in the student lounge, main building and the following week the BSL will have a festival on Wednesday 28. All are welcome to enjoy and learn. Freshman Reps Hope to Get Students Involved By Katiey Carroll A common problem on college campuses is the general non-caring attitude most students have. Here at Penn State Delco it is no different. In order to try to combat this attitude the SGA decided to appoint a new public relations assistant in addition to the New Freshman Representatives on the SGA Executive Committee. According to President Anton Shuford, the committee is made up of - freshmen “who share an interest in student government in the first year and desire to keep the freshman class abreast of what's going on, campus issues, and events.” The selection process is an Soul Food Friday, sponsored interview along with a questionnaire which is filled out. The President and Vice President then try to reach an agreement on between 2 and 5 representatives. This year, 5 representatives have been chosen. They are: Martin Panalli, Jennifer Pimpinella, Jen Gorman, Elizabeth Mondi, and Josh Korson. In addition to these 5, Rick Garecht has been appointed to be the Assistant Public Relations for the freshman class. This year, the representatives are hoping to eliminate the apathy held by students here on campus. Elizabeth Mondi wants to “definitely get them involved” in what goes on here at Delco. She said that they are there to (Continued on page 2) by the Black Student League, was a huge success. Enjoying the delicious food are (I. to r.) Dramatic Changes Ahead Around Campus By Paul Basilio Ever wondered how the campus is going to power up the new building? Do you know why you will need a new student ID? If you are one of the many Delco students who have noticed the dramatic changes happening around campus, but have no idea what it all means, don’t fret. Here is a brief update on the events unfolding around ou. If you hold an old ID, you will not have to pay for a re-take. The process may cause an initial annoyance, but the future benefits will be endless. The campus plans on-site ATM machines accessible through the new card. It acts as a debit card, and will be subject to fees. The amount of the fee will be determined when the University chooses an area bank to install the machine. If the University cannot find a bank willing to participate, the PSU Credit Union will put the system in place. The machines are scheduled to arrive in the Spring Semester : Under the old ID system, the University took a duplicate student/- staff picture to be used by the Security department. The new card requires only one picture, which will be stored on a computer in digital format. The ID system is not the only overhaul on campus this year. Construction on the new Technology building is going smoothly. Presently, the contractors are getting temporary utilities in place and working on the foundation. Equipment requirements and a preliminary list of furniture are being reviewed by campus committees composed of students, staff, and faculty. Since the new building will require a power upgrade for the campus, a few brief power shutdowns will be required. = Diane Jankowski, Business Director here at Delco, comments on the outings. “We are scheduling this work during the spring break. We do not have an exact schedule or date for the shutdown as yet, but we have requested that it take place as early in the week as possible.” Pat Hutton (3rd, DUS), sums up New student IDs will soon be able to serve a number of functions. the building excitement among most students, faculty, and staff. “With all of the new addittions, our campus is easily surpassing most four year campuses, as far as technology is concerned.” =
