— LION’S EYE — October 15, 1997 Soccer Team Displays Talent, Despite Losses By Mary Doolittle Skill, talent, and communication, combined with team work, create a great team regardless of the sport. This season’s soccer team has the skill, the talent (at times it looks like Division 2) and the communication (they sure do talk). Last season the soccer team (6-7) had a great defense but left much to be desired on the front line. This season the team has the great scoring trio of Paul Avagliano, Anthony Avagliano and Jeff Silcox. They also have an unprecedented three goalies: Karl Erickson, Kyle Luis and Joe McCall. However, even with returning bad-boy captain Tom Stapert, they just can’t scem to win when it comes down to the final minutes The cheerleaders plan on spreading their spirit to more of Delco’s athletes and “There is always some kind of mental break down or we just get tired,” commented Stapert. “For the most part we never have a bench. Sometimes we even play a man or two down. We have a great team. It just never works our way.” The team includes All-State player Paul Avagliano, who has gone 81 games straight scoring, as well as other top county players. Goalie McCall is. sometimes forced to play the field, which is something he excels in all around. He is versatile, having scored two goals this season. Currently the team has a losing record and one game left against arch- rival PSU Abington. They are asking the campus community to come out and support the team as they continue throu he an exciting season fans this year with a more enthusiastic squad. Baseball Team on a Bubble By Rachael Fetterman As fall settles and the air gets a little cooler things may seem a bit dull. But in a corner of the Penn State Delco campus you can find the Baseball team playing hard. Recently, these men, lead by Coach Adam Winters, have faced some tough competition such as, PSU - Wilkesbarre where they won one game of a double header 6 to 1 and lost one 20 to 3. They then faced and defeated Philadelphia Community College 8 to 7 and 7 to 3. Luzerne Community College was next and the guys came out strong winning both of those games 10 to 3, and then 8 to 3. Some key players in these games, according to Coach Winters, were Mike Simon and Bill Twaddle who each had a couple of hits. Bob Codler and Mike Zancolli also performed well. The team is looking forward to the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference Regionals on October 22, and the CCAC Championship that is held at University Park. Although the team seems to be on a winning streak, Coach Winters is just hoping to qualify for the Championship. He says, ” The team is on the bubble at this point, . but looking strong and eager to compete.” The baseball team prepares for compe- tition in the CCAC Regionals on October 22. New faces to the squad include Jeneine Pinnock, Shannon Newkirk, Victoria Lanza, Jen Gorman, Missy Deluca, Gina Ermillo, Alethia York, Natasha Sacherak, and Michelle Sciole. Their advisor is Mrs Sally Ent. Members say that “it is fun belonging to the club, and that the group is very spirited this season”. Other improvements to the club this season include new uniforms for the cheerleaders. : A Great Way to Meet People By Rob Coyle As students get accustomed to the fall semester, school may start to get stressful and repetitive. That's where intramurals come in. “Intramurals are a great way to relieve all the stress you build up throughout the day,” says Barbara Rostick, Campus Trainer and Director of Campus Intramuals. First semester intramurals feature football, tennis, and floor hockey. Football intramuals include five teams, each team playing six players ata time. All teams have subs, and so far game play has been fast-paced and a little rougher than expected - “It’s suppose to be two-hand touch, but everybody’s tackling each other out . there,” Rostick commented. Sixteen people have signed up for tennis intramuals, eight guys and eight women, so the brackets worked out perfectly. Tennis intramurals will be offered in the spring for those who missed the fall tournament. Floor Hockey will start up soon, and the Ms. Rostick is looking for some women to play. “We would like to see more girls getting involved. Getting there.” guys out to play hockey is never a problem, but ‘you rarely see girls out With or without female support, hockey will start up after the tennis tournament ends. The Spring semester will bring ‘with it two different intramural sports to get involved with, basketball and the Olympics. A three on three tournament is the format for basketball, and once ‘again, the lack of women players is a problem. Getting more females involved in intramurals is a goal for Ms. Rostick. The Olympics are different running events based off of the different events you’d see at the Games. So if any of these activities look interesting, or you would like to know more about any of the different sports Delco offers, stop my Ms. Rostick’s office at 138 Commons. “Getting involved in intramurals is really important, and its even a great way to meet people,” she adds. So if just the pure joy of playing sportsisn’t enough to get you out there, maybe finding your one true love is.
