October 15, 1997 — LION’S EYE — Page 7 New Business Degree Now on Campus By Erin Lulevitch University Park. There are a million reasons to go, but now, there is one more reason to stay at Delco. It's the new Bachelor of Science in Business degree, the first degree developed in the new Commonwealth College. And it's available now at Delco. The degree was designed last year by state-wide community business leaders and university alumni and faculty, led by Delco’s own Mr. Richard Barrett, Degree Program Coordinator. Barrett says one of the goals of the degree is to educate and prepare students who will then “emerge with marketable skills in today’s economy.” Students will not only learn the - fundamentals of business, but also the importance of how to apply what they have learned to a wide variety of employment opportunities. Along with common requirements, there is also a senior experience worth between six to nine credits. This portion of the program is broken down into three options, an internship, a group project, or conducted research in business. Mr. Barrett sums up the program as “a series of courses that prepares people for a workplace demanding portable skills. The program is ideally suited for students who have responsibilities or other committments that prevent them from transferring to University Park to complete their degree,” remarks Barrett. Currently, 80 students at Delco are enrolled in the upper division courses for the degree. About 90% of them are part- time students. This degree has been created in such a way that students will become more marketable in a variety of competitive jobs. For anyone still unsure about what major to choose, this is a worthy option to consider. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Mr. Barrett at (610) 892-1435 or by e-mail at rtb@psu.edu. Start with the Man in the Mirror By Melissa Moran Although the semester has just begun, the Penn State Delco Service Corps has accomplished many great things and undergone various changes. ‘Carwash, bake sales, tutoring...the list goes on. Our volunteers are very dedicated, creative, and hard working people. Sometimes they may feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or unappreciated, but together we are making a substantial difference in the lives of others. It may appear that volunteering involves a lot of hard work and endless hours with no reward. Many people have excuses why they can’t do this or that. It takes someone special to give e up a little of their free-time to help those in need. Even more work and dedication come with being Service Corps President, but Anthony Mariani has done an incredible job. Although Anthony is new this (Continued on page 8) — In Memoriam — OW A marker bearing the names of PSU seniors Justin Reese and Steve Wiley, former Delco students who were killed in a car crash a year ago, has been placed in front of a tree which was planted in memory of the two this past July. Save a Life Tomorrow By Giving Blood Today By Rachael Fetterman The students at Delco are involved in several volunteering programs this semester that show how much this campus cares about their community. On October 10 Delco took part in the Lee National Denim Day for Breast Cancer. This day was sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, “the nation’s largest private funder of research dedicated solely to Breast Cancer (Breast Health Basics).” “The premise behind this day,” explains Raquel Arrendondo, Student Services Specialist, “was for individuals (primarily faculty and staff) to donate $5 to support research and education of breast cancer.” By the end of the decade, approximately 1.8 million women and 12,000 men will Find Your Niche in a Club By Ryan Boldosser With the wide variety of clubs and organizations at Delco it’s hard to decide which clubs to join. If you don’t have time to join them, you can still get involved and participate in the special activities and events that the clubs have to offer. Tricia Fleck (3rd semester,History Major) commented, “Being involved in the drama club helped me to make friends my first semester at Penn State.” If sitting back and relaxing is your cup of tea check out the on-going LGBFA Film Fest in the Lions Den. If you're interested: Torch Song Trilogy will be the film featured on October 23 at 5pm. The Film Fest is hosted by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Friends Alliance Club and is just one of the ways the club reaches out to fellow students here at Delco. Brandon Hamm (9th semester, Speech Comm.) had this to say about the LGBFA Film Fest, “ The Film Fest, in its third year, is a program that allows the campus community to enjoy a popular film while being sensitized about gay, lesbian, and bisexual issues. We are a ~~ campus of diversity, and encourage all community members to our Film Fests and other events.” The Black Student League, another active club on campus, is hosting a Fashion Show on October 29 in the main student lounge. If your interest isn’t already piqued, how about volunteering to give blood on October 15 from 8am-6pm during PSU’s annual Blood Drive. “ I encourage everyone who is eligable to give blood and not let the fear of a needle keep you away,” commented Nicole Memmo (Volunteer Service Corps. President). “ You never know - the life you save could someday be your own.” For more information about the clubs offered at Delco and upcoming club events contact the club president: Adult Student Organization Salm Evans soel01 Asian American Student Caucus Ajay Nair atnl Black Student League Kiterra Moore kmm225 Cheerleading Club Lindsay Braceland Imb175 Cinema Club Paco Laborde fjl108 Communications Club Melissa Pach mlp182 Engineering Club Ali Fassih axf174 Karate Club Dennis Dosier dqd1 Keystone Society Jason Lewis jal247 Lesbian,Gay, Bisexual and Friends Alliance Brandon Hamm blh126 Lion Ambassadors Helen Walker hxw119 Lion's Eye Erin Lulevitch eell10 Lion's Globe Drama Group Ron Hill rfhé Multicultural Club Yanina Kulchitskaya yxk131 Muslim Student Organization Asad Azemi axa20 Nittany Christian Fellowship Nathan Appleby nral09 PSU Service Corps. The Red Cross Blood Drive will be held on campus October 15. Many people have hesitations about donating blood. The fact is from the American Red Cross Criteria for Donor, that almost anyone can give blood, “If you are at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds or more, and are healthy.” The Red.Cross must collect 6,500 pints of blood every week to sufficiently supply patients in this area. Helen Walker plans on giving blood for her first time this semester, her third studying Psychology. Like many other people she thinks giving blood is vital because, “Someone will need that blood, and it’s knowing that she can save a life.” To make an appointment to donate you can contact Raquel Arrendondo at 892-1207, or simply stop by room 112, the student lounge, in the main building from 8 am to 6 pm. October 22 is the Moss Rehab Center Blue Jeans Day. The Volunteer Service Center is selling buttons, for $5.00, to support their cause. These buttons are then worn on October 22, which is deemed a casual blue jeans ~ day, so the buttons are more prominently displayed. All the profits made from the button sale are to benefit victims of brain injuries. An education major, Nicole Memmo, cautions that,” it could happen to any of you, from drunk driving or basically anything. So it's a good reason to support it.” - Buttons have been on sale since October 8, and to purchase one see a Volunteer Service Center representative, or stop into the Volunteer Service Center in Room 13 4: et ready to join the...
