November 1, 1995 — LION'S EYE — Page 7 Need Some Extra Help? Visit the Learning Center § By Jaclyn Fried What is room 109 in the John D. Vairo Library (formerly known as the Library Learning Center)? No classes are held in this room, But it is a place of learning, justly called the Learning Center. It is a place where students can be tutored in everything from biology to psychology. The tutors available are student tutors as well as four person professional staff which includes Pete ‘Brakman, Jackie Hudson, Sharon Manco, and Norma Notzold. These four are focused on developing the writing skills of students. With a variety of backgrounds, including a former journalist and an English teacher, they can help with formal lab reports, English essays, and even term papers. Any student, full or part time, can go to the Learning Center, arrange an appointment, and be assisted with their work at no cost. The work does not have to be only compositions, but also can be assignments for science or math courses. These classes are covered by the peer tutors: Mazen Abdel-Kahman, Megan Durkin, Jaclyn Fried, Henry Hale, Michael LaRuc, Ed Leo, Mollie ~ LeStourgen, Jen Lewis, Alex Ostroff, Lori Peacock, Michael Pro, and Tanja St. Pierre. To get their help, simply leave a note in one of the pockets on the bulletin board in the Learning Center, and they’ll arrange a convenient appointment for tutoring. Other peer tutors, Mark Messick and Terri Partovi (math) and Karen Tracy and Tony Tresset (writing), are available in the Learning Center at regularly scheduled times. The Learning Center is not only active during the school year, but also throughout the summer. The Thirty Hours Program involves peer tutors working with incoming freshmen. Another summer program called Project Success is an enrichment program fro students from Chester High School. A new program with Toby Farms Elementary School in Upland is also being initiated. It will help third grade students that are two years behind in their reading. The coordinator of the Learning Center, Mrs. Notzold, encourages students to help with this new project, as well as to become peer tutors to help other PSU students. All tutors are paid by Penn State and are always in demand. . Whether a student needs help or can offer some, the door is always open in the Learning Center, room 109 in the Vairo Building. By Nicholas Felici As we welcome the arrival of one very important person coming to Delco November 2, President Graham Spanier, we also mourn the departure of another very important person to our campus, Nancy Trainor. The Student Activities Specialist since September of ‘94 and the parent- figure of the SGA, Nancy Trainor is leaving the Delaware County Campus. She is taking up a business position at Penn State Great Valley in Malvern, working in Academic Affairs. She has experienced many different aspects in ‘working with the students. In March of ’87, Nancy Trainor began working here at Delco with the Admissions Office. She later moved to the Business Office and began to advise the Student Government. In September of last year, she was hoisted to the Student Activities Specialist Position. There she spent her days (and many long nights) assisting the SGA with her knowledgable and friendly guidance. Current Student Government Secretary, Pauline Ferzetti commented, “I'm not quite sure where we [the SGA] would be right now without her great leadership and dependability. She - really meant alot to us, and she will be missed a great deal.” Said Mrs. Trainor about leaving the Delco students, “I have raised all my kids, and I might have become old if it wasn’t for this job. Working with bright, interested young men and women keeps you bright, interested and young. I will miss Delco and the people here very much.” Show Supports Scholarships By Bernard F. Mount Town Talk and the Adult Student Organization will co-sponsor an indoor craft show on Sunday, November 12, 1995 from 8 a.m. to 5 p-m. in the gym. This is the first of what Mrs. Schaffer, Financial Aid, hopes to be “an annual event.” There will be approximately 95 vendors ready to help you select your holiday gifts. Food will be sold in the cafeteria during the show. Admission to the craft show will be $1 per person. Proceeds will benefit the Adult Student Scholarship Fund. Last year $1500 was raised by the Adult Student Organization from the sale of pretzels resulting in two scholarships awarded to two PSU Delco students. All students are invited to come out and support their campus. Volunteers are needed to help set up, sell food, and clean up for the show. Volunteers should contact Mrs. Shaffer (105M) by Thursday, November 9. Students are also needed to help with weekly pretzel sales for the Adult Student Organization.
