Success of Fall Teams Brings Hope for Next Season By Michael Menichini It’s that time of year again when we mull over how Delco’s Fall Varsity teams finished. The soccer team ended the season on a wet note while the volleyball team went out with a bang. The baseball team came home with an Eastern Conference Championship while the tennis team served themselves an incredible season. That's right, Delco it’s time for Sport’s Wrap-Up. The soccer team ended the season with a tough record of 1-14-1. The part that people don’t see in this record, though, is that this team will be entering next season with confidence. . “We have the heart and the confidence to go out and win next year,” said captain Mike Hyde. The season was plagued with injuries and a lack of college experience. The outlook on next season is excellent and don’t be surprised to see these guys in the playoffs. ~ Women’s volleyball is a team that made quite an impression on the volleyball circuit. ended the season with a 10-8 record and have nothing but positive outlooks for the future. Captain Lauren McGlennen says, “Next year we'll be the team that people will have to look out for. We are losing only one Starter and gaining a ton of experience.” Key players returning are Lauren McGlennen and Kim Redding, outside powers, and Kendra McMillen, center. This young team This will be another PSU-Delco team that has playoff aspirations in mind. The coed tennis team made quite an impressive showing with a record of 6-2. The first and second doubles went undefeated this year. “This was an excellent year for our tennis team this season,” said coach Tiz Griffith. The most incredible aspect of this team is that they are only losing two people. This is yet another team that has playoff/ championship in their foreseeable future. Speaking of playoffs, the baseball team finished the season with a 10-7 record and an Eastern Conference title in their hand. “The key for the season was that this team was stronger than last year’s. The captains didn’t allow any heads to hang and picked everyone up the whole year”, says catcher Mike Pralle, 1st semester Agriculture. The team lost the third game of the series to Penn State Beaver campus in the CCAC championship game. Although this was a tough loss for the team, it was a spark that is about to ignite a fire. Coach Joe DiMao says, “We are on a mission. That mission is to win the CCAC championship. We are losing a few key, players but we have an incredible number of freshmen returning.” The team will be losing star pitcher Pete Renaudo as well as Mike Rattigan, Lance Spear, and Bill Gagliardi. This team is championship caliber talent awaiting a season title. Maybe next year’s headline will say, “Mission Accomplished; ” Photo by Pete Howard By Rob Duffy Previous years have shown that PSU Delco has the ability and capability to produce a number of good men’s and women’s basketball teams. In ’92 the men’s team went on a record-breaking 24-0 consecutive win streak. That year the women’s team won the CCAC Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference (CCAC) championship. : In "93 the men’s team went to the finals in the CCAC championship, and the women won the CCAC championship again for the second time in a row. In '94 the men’s team made it to the semifinals in the CCAC championship, and the women’s team made it to the finals again this year. What about ‘95? Apparently this year’s teams are looking as good as ever. The coaches are the ones who put these teams together. Their knowledge of the game seals the team for the unity it needs to win. Without that seal it is tough to play as a team. The coaching staff currently includes: Men's head coach Bill Wiley, with his assistant coaches Joe Demaio, Joe Guinta, and Dave Fisher, and the women’s team head coach Brian Donoghue, and his assistant coach, Ron Freeman. Joe Giunta commented, Men’s and Women’s B- ball Shooting for Consistency “Box out and rebound; that’s all I ask of them." Men's team The men’s basketball team has been trying to get ahead from day one. The Coach Bill Wiley started pre- practice sessions on October 10, so the men could get in shape, before cuts. These practice sessions are also physical workouts to prepare everyone on the team for their first game and home opener against Willimson at 7:30 PM on November 20. Coach Wiley said, “Things look promising, but you can’t always count on that." Women’s Team The women’s team is looking forward to having another successful year. Retaming assistant coach Ron Freeman said, “ These girls are some of the best talent in the league." The women’s team has been struggling for the past couple of years, but this year they are organized, they have players, and they are ready to roll. Coach Brian Donoghuge is new to the PSU system. Ron said, "Fitting in and doing well will not be hard with this group of talent.” Fans can look forward to seeing the men’s and women’s basketball teams battle grueling games on their road to victory over their CCAC and EPCC challengers this season. Delco Student Wins Golf Tournament: Team Takes Second Place + By Rob Duffy What is that little white ball for? What do they do with it? How do they use that long metal thing? Penn State Delco’s golf team really knows exactly what to do with that little white ball. : Coached by Raphael Hidalgo, ESACT instructor, the men’s golf team is one of a kind. The four players include Bob Hughes, Jason Dirmbauer, Brian Hamilton, and Benjiman Klaphalz. This team, which deserves the nickname “The four horsemen”, ventured up to University Park to play in the tournament for the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference championship cup. Overall the men’s team came in second in the rankings out of six other teams. ~ One of the more outstanding players in this tournament was Delco’s Bob Hughes. “I felt confident and very lucky at the same time,” said Bob, who took first in the tournament out of twenty-four players with a first day score of 82 and a second day score of 84. : “This group of kids are the best I have ever had”, said coach Hidalgo. “They are a great group of guys as well”. Friday the thirteenth is usually known as a very unlucky day for most people, but not for golf head coach Raphael Hidalgo , golf star Bob Hughes, head basketball coach Bill Wiley, and a well known member of the community, Steve Terdanado. On this day at Paxon Hallow Country Club this team of golfers showed everyone else how to golf at the Presence Cup Scrambler. In this tournament each player takes the shot, and the best one of the group is the one that advances and is recorded for the game. After a shot is recorded, everyone else then places their ball down and that is where everyone takes their next shot from ; Last year this same Delco team took first in the tournament with a score of 11 under par. This year the team won the cup and again with a score of 11 under par. Go figure. If any student is interested, "Raphe” is running a golf club on campus for beginners as well as experts. Raphe invites all newcomers to join. He is usually in his office, 134 Commons on Monday, Wednesday, ‘and Friday all day.
