These tree climbers are sprouting up all over campus. # Trooper And Medic Give Alcohol Demonstration By Tim McLaughlin Steven Smith’s birthday is this Friday, October 13. But this year the Smith family won’t be celebrating because Steven died last November from alcohol poisoning. Steven's death occurred while he was pledging a fraternity. In the month of October, schools all across the country will be holding drug and alcohol awareness clinics. On the week of October 16 through October 20, Delco will have its own Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week. support LION AMBASSADORS” school supply drive | for: Chester-Upland School District Oct. 2-27 i= please Lectures, clinics, videos, and demonstrations will be held throughout the week. On Monday, October 16 State Trooper Robert Dodge and a paramedic will conduct a demonstration in room 101 in the main building. Trooper Dodge will be giving beers to assistants brought with him to sce how each beer affects people differently. No volunteers will be ‘taken from the audience so students shouldn't get their hopes up. Trooper Dodge will also be showing a video on drinking and driving. This demonstration will be during the common hour 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday October 17, videos will be set up in the main lounge and the library. They will focus on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse. They will be shown at various times throughout the day, but mostly during common hour. On Thursday October 19, videos will be showing in the cafeteria. There will be free nonalcoholic drinks and munchies offered to prove that you can socialize without having to drink. The SGA will be participating and it is encouraged that other school clubs join in too. It is strongly recommended that each student attend at least one these demonstrations or videos. Director of Student Activities, Nancy Trainor hopes “everyone will come out to hear what State Trooper Dodge has to say.” She added, “I don’t think everyone realizes what they can do to themselves by not drinking responsibly.” Technological Adventure For Students At Discovery Day By Laurie Koechert Attention all majors from Business to Nursing, from basket weaving to worm farming. Come to Discovery Day and check out the latest technology in your field of study. Or if you have a younger brother or sister who is fascinated by robots and cars, bring that youngster to Penn State on Saturday, October 28. From 10 a.m.- 3 p.m,, Penn State will host the second annual Discovery Day for the community to promote new science technologies. Throughout the day, there will be interactive demonstrations, projects, and activities on campus. Mini-sessions for computers featuring Project Vision and LIAS, will be held in the Vairo Library. The Upper Chichester Police Department will feature an interactive police car, “Sunny the Robot”. Anyone who is majoring in “nursing or is just interested in the medical field may want to check out Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital's program demonstrating the newest technology in Cholesterol and Blood Screenings. If you are majoring in Biology or, perhaps, worm farming, The Delaware County Intermediate Unit of Science will perform experiments on acid rain and its effects along with some other exhibits. Also, PECO Energy will display their very own electric car and bike. : : Penn State will also feature some of its newest technologies. There will be demonstrations on Exercise & Sports Science, Project Vision, and Radioactivityé& Electricity. A project called morphing will be displayed by Dr. John Ousey, Associate Professor of Earth and Mineral Sciences. Morphing is basically an electronic changing of images. “We are choosing a fun way to show sophisticated computer technology on campus. Morphing is especially fun to do with faces,” said Dr. Ousey. Dr. Asad Azemi, Assistant Professor of Engineering, will have on display four small robots. Students will be able to race remote control robots against each other. Teachers, don’t worry, there is something fun for you on Discovery Day! Workshops will be given on science, math, and computers. In the sciences, Dr. Azemi will discuss courseware; and Dr. Ousey will teach meteorology. Mr. Mike Kersnick, business faculty, will focus his attention on Statistics. Jim Foltz, along with other students, will demonstrate Project Vision on the Netscope. The Delaware County Intermediate Unit, who will be previewing the latest in Educational . Software, started Discovery Day. Penn State co-sponsored this first event last year. Discovery Day is held to promote science technology for grades K-12. “It is a good opportunity for children in Delaware County to learn about technology. Hopefully, this will encourage them to pursue a college career in computers or science technology,” said Diane Jankowski, Director of Business Services, who is coordinating the event for the campus. Saturday, October 28 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Penn State, will be a day to discover. ESPN To Air International Karate Tournament From Delco’s Athletic Center By Rob Duffy Hey karate fans, look at what is coming to Penn State Delco: our own little Mortal Kombat Tournament. No, just kidding. But the 6th Annual International Tang Soo Do Championship is coming this Saturday, October 14, 1995 in the athletic center. The tournament has been held for six years. Every two years it is held in a different country, and this year it is being held in the USA at PSU Delco. The tournament includes competitors from different countries, including the USA, the United Kingdom, Greece, Germany, Malaysia, and Australia. The tournament is hosted by a different country every two years. This year it is headed by Master Frederick Scott of the USA. Itincludes individual and team competitions, as well as demonstrations from both. Among the competitors at the tournament will be Tod Wilkons, a student at PSU Delco. “I am looking forward to the tournament; I have trained very hard and very long.” Tod is Captain of the Forms Team, and he is also one of the most accomplished young adults in the USA in Tang Soo Do. : Athletic Director Tiz Griffith commented, “ I am glad there are students in this tournament. I think it will be very interesting to watch.” Two other competitors are PSU graduates: Master Sam Wallace and Mr. Guy Petroski. These two men are the captains of the USA B-team. All three men have competed internationally and nationally, receiving both silver and gold medals for their performances. This event was put together by the Tang Soo Do Championship organization, which is chaired by Pat Croce. The event is sponsored by many large companies, including Nova Care, Johnson and Johnson, Tylenol, the Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino, and Penn State University.
