November 10, 1994 — LION'SEYE — ® s SPORT On and Off The Court, Delco B-Ball Player Is A Big Star By Emmanuel Seabrooks Last year,as a late walk on two weeks into the semester, as a defensive basketball player, this Penn State Delco student had his work cut out for him. It was determination of Andre Harris that got him through that semester of new faces, and surroundings. But hard work was never foreign to this student. Andre graduated from Downingtown Senior High School in 1992 where he tried to get involved in as much as possible, running track, playing first and second point guard for the basketball team, as well as belonging to the Black Student Union, the Technical School, and SADD, working for an architect after school in the evenings, and playing ball for church leagues. Following graduation, Andre enrolled in the New York Institute of Technology, for a semester. The surroundings were rough, and Andre found himself in a very dark corner of New York where many toted guns, and situations sometimes got heated. Andre steered clear of those people he felt were trouble, playing ball on the courts as much as he could and praying to be accepted to another University. After a year, he was accepted into Penn State, majoring in Business Administration, for the Fall semester of '93. His intentions were to go straight to University Park, but unfortunately his credits didn’t transfer from N.Y.LT. in time so he decided to attend classes at Delco, and he plans to move up to the Park for the fall semester of '95. Andre spent a great deal of time the hard work and . involving himself in many activities this summer, coaching basketball day ‘camps for his former high school, working as a waiter at Hoss's Restaurant in Lionville, even modeling on the side, and running a small detailing business with a friend. He plans to open his own business after college. He is a good listener, so you can always find Andre surrounded with friends. “People feel comfortable opening up to me. Not all guys are dogs,” he explains. He's a very easygoing person who likes to set goals for himself and achieve them. His first goal for this semester are his grades. Andre would like to maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average this year. His second is to make some true close friends; Andre has lost a number of friends to fatalities in the last two years. His third and most important goal for this semester is to win the championship this year for his friend Jimmy King (former Delco student and basketball player who was killed in a car accident this summer). “This means a lot to me to win it for him. He was a close friend of mine”, says Andre. “Our team is ranked #1 this year, and we have a lot of team players, so I know we can do it.” Lastly, Andre is hoping to remain a positive influence to his brothers. “It's hard to be a roll model, ” he says. Andre is clearly a Penn State student with goals and is working hard to attain each one. He also plans to show his brother Aaron (the 511 230 pound full back / defensive line back for Downingtown who recently signed on to Penn State) around University Park next fall. Then Penn State will have another Harris on its team. B-Ball Team Seeks CCAC Title By Tonya Corbin Basketball. Is it a way of life or just a sport?
