Photo by: WES TOMLINSON Lion Misses First Serve As New Tennis Courts Open By Kaspar Stromme The Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Tennis Courts were opened with festivities on June 19. Present for the dedication were representatives from Penn State Delaware County and the Ethel Sergeant Clark Smith Memorial Fund, numerous professionals from local raquet clubs, and an enthusiastic crowd. After the dedication the Nittany Lion stepped on the court to receive the first serve. Unfortunately the 90 degree weather hit the Lion even faster than the serve and the Lion lost. With the courts officially opened the pros stepped in and performed a short exhibition. Later they conducted clinics with the public, sharing some Delco Offers Variety of Fall Sports Activities ‘By Wes Tomlinson The Penn State fall sports calendar at the Delco campus features the following varsity sports: women’s volleyball, soccer (women are encouraged to sign up for this traditional men’s sport), team tennis, (men and women participate in both singles and doubles), and men and women’s basketball. All students who are interested in signing up for any of these varsity sports should come to a meeting in the gym, which is located in the Commons Building, on Wednesday, August 25, at 3 P.M. Physicals will be given free for all varsity sports the following day, ‘August 26, between 3 and 5 P.M. at office 134 in the Commons Building. - Melissa McConnell, Athletic Trainer, said, “Students can obtain physicals from their own family doctors, but they will need to pay the fee charged for that service.” Eligibility Requirements Tiz Griffiths, Delco Athletic Director, outlined Penn State’s academic = requirements for participation in varsity sports as follows: “1. Students must be full time (minimum of 12 credits). 2. Must maintain a 1.8 average or better for the first semester. 3. Must maintain a 2.0 average for all succeeding semesters. 4. If a student drops below the required average or drops a course so that they no longer qualify as a full time student, they immediately become ineligible to compete in varsity sports.” Intramurals Set Students are encouraged to sign up for flag football and intramural tennis on Tuesday, September 24 in office 134 of the Commons Building. The flag football teams are composed of from 12 to 15 students (men and ~ women). The games are played on Mondays and Wednesdays during the Common Hour from 12:30 P.M. to 1:20 P.M. and will commence on September 27. Intramural tennis singles, doubles and mixed doubles will begin on Tuesday, September 28 and will be played every Tuesday and Thursday during Common Hour. The hours for using the equipment in the Fitness Room in the Commons Building are from 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. Individual fitness programs can be provided by contacting Melissa McConnell in Office 134. Aerobic classes may be starting in the gym in the late afternoon if enough students sign up. Melissa said to “stay tuned for details on a Penn State Delco ‘Fitness Contest! to see who will be named Mr. and Ms. Universe-ity this fall. Students who are interested in becoming a student athletic trainer or who have an interest in sports medicine or physical therapy as a career should see Melissa in Office 134 in the Commons Building. Tennis puns were abundant in the opening remarks. Eleanor Hammonds, a friend of the late Smith, symbolically described the courts as a "doubles" effort between Penn State and the Memorial Fund. While most of the funding came from the Memorial Fund and Core States Bank, one of the trustees of the Memorial Fund, the location was provided by Penn State. Theodore D. Hadley, Advisory Committee, remarked that the choice of location was greatly influenced by the facilities already here; the parking lot and the lockers became an important part of the total equation. The courts are available for student and community use.
