Photo by: DIANA MICERI ‘Women’s Basketball: High Hopes For Season By Caroline Kalafut The women’s basketball team made an impressive start in their first game of the season, Tuesday, November 24, against Delaware County Community College. The PSU Lion’s won with a final score of 66-43 points. High scorers were Leslie Dawson with 26 points, Julie Munch, 16 points, and Yolanda Capers, 10 points. Coach Ce Ce Grimes is beginning her first year on campus with high hopes for a winning season. Her five starters are: Yolanda Capers, Leslie Dawson, Reanie Hassiepen, Marla Stambaugh, and Julie Munch. Waiting to play as needed are Karen Hamalak, Kathleen Donnelly, Karen Shull, and Maureen Glynn. There is good news and bad news about this promising team. Bad news first. The wind grows strong and cold, as the sounds are few. A storm is coming. More and More the wind blows ‘hard. Chimes in the wind sound out . Definitely the warning of a storm coming. A sheet of newspaper, driven by the wind, rolls clumsily down a road, gets caught on a fence : then breaks loose, and down the road again. The storm is near. The reflection of light, the sound of tapping on the ground, will be transferring to Main Campus in mid-season. The good news is that a former player will be back in school by that time. This still leaves the team with little, if any, depth, unless more player are recruited. If any female students have some talent in ‘basketball, or know of someone who does, get in touch with Tiz Griffith or Ce Ce Grimes at the Athletic Building. Coach Ce Ce Grimes is extremely optimistic about her team. “1 feel good about our chances. We're improving daily. The girls are very excited and ready to go.” She praised the entire team, calling them all good workers. The Athletic Department wants all Penn State Delco students to attend as many games as possible. Constant encouragement can give this team and others the drive to embark on a winning season. As we bustle forth through gusts of wind and patches of ice, a slight bouncing sound can be heard from somewhere on the The sound of the budget dropping? No, couldn’t be. Dom Deluise jogging around the Learning Center? Unthinkable! No, that low sound of dribbling can be traced to the Athletics Building, where the men’s basketball team is preparing for its upcoming season. After a fall season of soccer and volleyball disappointments, - sentiments around the campus tended to be in agreement: “Please, let the basketball season begin!!!” It’s no small wonder; ever since the semester started, the excitement has been building and the rumors have been flying: will the team be as good as last year? Will the team exceed all There are many unanswered questions, but the upcoming season will see the men’s b-ball team answering most of them. Led by coaches Bill Wiley and Lou Tosi, the team, which includes captains Breyon Justice, Mike Koperna, David Meyer and Andy Strizinger, and players Greg Richard, Jeff Danzi, Rob Duffy, Mark Lindsay, Brian McTouge, Craig Perry, Mike Seal, Bran Shia and Fred Warden, hopes to provide Penn State Delco with a season of exciting and entertaining basketball games. The determination is there; just watch them at practice. The fast break is crisp, the passing is sharp, and the defense is impenetrable. This team is dedicated to its goal to be the best there is, the best of the best. As I said before, there are many unanswered questions surrounding this basketball team.
