Page 4 — LION'S EYE — December 11, 1992 OPINION nd REVIEW EDITORIAL: Be Scroogy About A Real Issue By Andy McIntyre With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season there is perhaps no better way to enjoy the festive holiday spirit than going out and singing Christmas carols. This is a tradition which has been passed down from generation to generation, not to infringe on anyone’s rights but simply to celebrate Christmas. Sadly, in our great quest for equality and political correctness society is turning into a name calling class of pre-schoolers, who, at the drop of a hat, seem to be ready to argue about anything. I truly believe that when we as a society begin to allow this to happen we are falling short of our responsibilities as thoughtful adults, while blatent forms of injustice go on around us everyday, much of it caused by the very government we deem to elect. In response, society ends up arguing over problems which aren’t really problems at all. Don’t you think that there are other more pressing problems to worry than whether Christmas carols are “politically correct”? Consider problems such as the economy, health care, and education. When will we wake up "and realize that instead of being so offended by “Silent Night” we should be more offended by the ill treatment of the American labor force? Or that in the wealthiest nation in the world there are people starving in the streets, and we have one of the highest rates of infant mortality in the entire world. Frankly, I am sick and tired of hearing stories about elementary school kids who can no longer perform their Christmas concerts because the school board is afraid of getting sued by some overzealous paranoid individual. They would rather cause a problem over some hundred year old Christmas songs, instead of the two hundred year old oppression which has been handed to working class Americans by the heartless ruling class. Cahall The Penn State University Budget has been cut. All departments have been cutting back and recycling money. These cut backs have affected all the campuses. Who would think that throughout these cutbacks a Commonwealth Campus could afford to get another building. Imagine that a campus found the money for a new space for students. This campus must have sacrificed a great deal to produce the funds for this building. Many people must have worked to organize the efforts to create a much needed space for students. The students of this campus must really appreciate what they have been given. I can tell you that the students of this campus are not grateful for what they have been given. If you haven’t already guessed it, this campus is Delco. This campus is your campus and the building I have been discussing is the “new” Lion's Den. I visited your campus recently and was disgusted with what I found in the Lion’s Den. In the backroom someone has either kicked or punched holes in the wall. WHY? I can also tell you that there - were many people who worked very Christopher Cowan, last year’s SGA President and Tracy McLoughlin, this year’s SGA President, have both worked very hard to see that there was adequate space for students. There are video games, a ping-pong table, a pool table and Student Organization Offices in the “new” Lion’s Den. What more do the students want? Money for taking? Let’s not forget that the video machines have been vandalized and money has been stolen from the machines. Money which the SGA is losing. WHY? Let me tell you a thought or two.... The Lion's Den is for student use, yes this is true. However, student use does not mean student abuse. Abuse is what has taken place in the Lion's Den. I am presently a student at University Park Campus and was a part of last- year’s Student Government. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to attend the Delaware County Campus. But I am ashamed of what some of the students have become. People, get with it. Do you want to lose the building? Do you want the building closed? Do you even care? I care, and I know there are many people who do care about the campus and what has become of hard to get the “new” Lion's Den on the “new” Lion’s Eye. Wise up campus for student use. beforeit’s too late. great way to do it and fill 13 Great Ideas . . .
