Page 4 — LION’SEYE — October 14, 1992 oP nd REY Editorial: Three Good Reasons to Vote By Kaspar Stromme This editorial assumes that you are registered to vote. If you're not, crawl back into your little hole and stay there until you get another chance. Well, it’s that time again and the presidential candidates are lined up in what appears to be a shooting gallery. One down and two to go at this point. The two remaining ones are pretty much holding their respective ground, so it’s hard to pick the winner. Since the decision should be entirely yours, I'll only say this: if you can’t decide, vote for the one with the best sidekick, because we all know that the vice-precidency is where the next president gets trained. Kind of like boot camp, Dan. Bill, anyone else? Anyway, the average voter could easily be discouraged by the situation, so to help the frustrated voter (and I'm sure there’s a couple of you out there) I’ve put together a couple of reasons to vote. Voting is a privilege! You may not realize this, but there are still many people around the world who cannot choose their country’s leaders. These people are envious of you and would give anything to be able to vote. In other words.... Voting is a right! Every American above the age of 18 is guaranteed a say in who rules. You can, and should use this right to ensure that future generations can enjoy that right too. But remember not to celebrate your candidate’s victory with a beer; in this free country you might get arrested. Voting is a duty! Voting is a responsibility given to you, and by neglecting to vote you could allow changes beyond your control. Sure, your vote may be one is a million, but that one vote could decide the election. You could be responsible for another four years of economic constipation or another four years of you know what. And don’t forget, there’s people out there like David Duke, who are counting on your indifference. These people will only win the day the rest of America is sleeping. If you can’t decide, don’t feel too bad. At least you registered and that’s probably the most important step. This way you're telling the candidates you care, but not for them. You should also consider the independents; Perot showed us that the possibility of a viable third party is not farfetched. So get to the polls and cast your ballot this November. Its your privilege, right, and duty. ~ Vol. XXIV, No. 2 The Pennsylvania State University October 16, 1992 Delaware County Campus - EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Kaspar Stromme PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR Diana Miceri PRODUCTION EDITOR Roger Lee ,gS1STANT EDITOR Artin Armani REPORTERS Peggie Cahall Maya Kaly Andy McIntyre Ryan Corcoran Melissa Kline Cristine Phillips Eric Forte Rosa Laborde Damion Strommer Mike Jamison Phil Liberto Jamie Wismer Caroline Kalafut ARTISTS Matt Dougherty Jamie Wismer PHOTOGRAPHER Heather Farquhar ADVISORS Barbara Daniel John Terrell The LION'S EYE is published Monthly during the academic year by the students of the Delaware County Campus. Editorial: Delinquents Make Us Look Bad By Cristine Phillips ~ For all of you out there who just live to hear about a bunch of punk kids making the rest of us look bad, sit back and relax... I've got one for you. This time our generational shame was caused by a group of kids who felt it necessary to loot and rob the area Wawa. For those unfamiliar with the incident, allow me to summarize the details of the pathetic event. Thursday, October 1, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a group of college students (from area colleges) left Pulsations nightclub and ventured into the Wawa at Route 1 and Brinton’s Lake Road. Then, for some reason, about 18 to 23 students began to loot the store and break into the cash drawers. The gang was composed of guys and girls, and all participants ranged in age The two clerks on duty were viciously beaten and hospitalized. But perhaps the most pathetic thing of all was that over 50 people stood around and did NOTHING!! No one tried to stop the looting, let alone help the people being violently attacked. I found about this event from my father, who lives to belittle my generation. As he walked up the stairs waving the article triumphantly in my face, I thought “Great! Now what did some idiot kid do?” I was hardly expecting something like this. And all I'm left thinking is, WHY?! Why did those students do this? Does a Twix and a bottle of Snapple cost that much? I hardly think so. These people couldn’t possibly think this was ‘cool.” Call me a nerd, but I find nothing ‘cool’ about stealing and looting. What I find even less ‘cool’ is stupid and senseless violence! Maybe these students don’t understand how greatly these types of actions hurt the rest of us. We, as a generation, struggle everyday to blow that “damn teenagers” stereotype and be taken seriously. And then along comes an incident like this that makes us all look bad. Parents around the country will hold this over our heads for months to come. So as to all of you . who participated in this stupid stunt, let me say “thank you”.... I hope that Snapple was worth it! On November 3, VOTE as if your life depended on it. No matter what political persuasion, yours, mine and ours, the future depends on an effective government. Effective anything, government included, requires effort on everyone's part. Here's your chance. I, for one, look forward to exercising my power of the vote. I hope you'll enjoy it too.
