c.c. reader Who is the Vietnam Era veteran? Is he or she accu rately portrayed in movies, television shows, and books? More attention has been given to the Vietnam veteran re cently, including a national observance of Vietnam Vet erans Week during Spring 1979. The Veterans Administra tion has compiled information to obtain a profile of the Vietnam Era veteran. Such a veteran must have had some military service between August 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975. During that period nearly 9 million persons did serve and were returned to civilian life. Vietnam veterans are more educated than their counterparts from World War II or the Korean Conflict. Hanging in the Gallery Lounge from October 8 to Octoer 26 are several water colors and a pencil sketch by David Armstrong. Armstrong, a Pennsylvania resident paints in a conservative figurative, or representational style. The exhibited works reflect some what sentimental rural UV la DI LI Vietnam-The Aftermath Sixty percent of the Vietnam veterans had completed high school, 13 percent had one to three years of college, and 8 percent had four or more years of college. Only 20 per cent of the Vietnam veterans did not have a high school diploma at the time of separa tion as compared to 55 per cent for World War II veter ans and 38 percent for Korean veterans. Unemployment rates, not seasonally adjusted, for Viet nam veterans for February 1979 were 6.5 percent for vet erans age 20-24, and 5.6 per cent for those 24-34. In Feb ruary there were 53,000 Viet nam Era veterans receiving unemployment compensation for ex-service personnel benefits. According to the Bureau of Census Current Population Survey, veterans between 20 and 39 had a median personal income of $12,680 during 1977, as com pared to $9,820 median in come for nonveterans in the same age group. Families headed by male Vietnam Era veterans 'age 20-39 also had higher median incomes (15,040) than those headed by male nonveterans (12,850) in 1976. They represent 31 percent of all VA patients with all types of psychiatric diagnoses (including alcohol and drug-related diagnoses).
