November 10, 1977 NEWS NOTES Grads "So You Want To Go To Graduate School?" is the title of a seminar open to all students interested in going to graduate school. It will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 1977 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge. This program is sponsored by DTK, PSEA, PSPE, lEEE, Beta Chi, International Affairs Association, ITE, and PSGSA in cooperation with the Counseling Center. Various members of the faculty and student body will be available to talk about many different considerations one has to take into account when thinking of applying for graduate or professional study. Information on financial aid, testing and academic information will be available for students to consider. Students considering going to graduate school should attend this meeting for possible helpful hints on applying to graduate school which is a different process than applying for undergraduate school. Many of these differences will be explained, some in detail. Members of the faculty and graduate students themselves will be available as resource people t(*.lalk about experi ences andldifferent approaches needed to!be considered when applying to graduate school. CLEP The College Level Entrance Examination(CLEP) will be administered at Capitol Campus on Saturday, November 19 at 8:30 a.m. CLEP is designed to assist persons in obtaining college credit for learning attained outside the formal classroom structure. The CLEP exam is divided into two parts: the general battery of tests and the specific subject exams. The general battery of tests consists of five areas of knowledge: english composition, humanities, natural sciences, mathematics, and social science and history. Joseph Zuvic, Sales Manager for Capitate 1978, looks on as Dr. McDermott, Provost, buys the first subscription. The specific subject exams are structured to measure know ledge in specific college courses previously taken. The deadline for application for the general battery of tests is Wednesday, November 16; deadline for the specific subject is the last Friday of the previous month. The next testing date will be Saturday, December 17. Transfer If you are planning to transfer to University Park, stop in at the Student Affairs Office, W-103, and pick up a copy of THE TRANSFER. Published especially for the transfer student, it explains the steps involved in the process, plus information on registra tion, student aid, student employment, residence halls vs. off-campus living and many more helpful hints. Chess Club The Capitol Campus Chess Club is currently holding a ckess tournament. The tourna ment began at 9:30 am Wednesday, November 2, and is continuing until the end of the term. Tournament play is every Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Gallery Lounge, and all interested students and faculty are invited to play. First week action saw Dave Barto getting 2 points, Kevin Heberly 1 point, and Mark Servinsky got the bye. Dr. Susskind and Ken Jones were scoreless. The club met again on Wednesday, November 9, in the lounge. Mark Servinsky gained 1 point against Kevin Heberly. Dr. Susskind and Dave Barto played to a draw. Reader Press Association Meets at University Park By Peggy Hartzell Staff Writer On Sunday, November 5, the Press Association of Commonwealth Campuses met at University Park for the first time of the '77-78 school year. The Association is a university organization designed to in crease communication and cooperation between Penn State campuses, and to foster creative ideas and conventional training of the university newspaper staffs. Approxi mately 20 editors and staff members from Berks, Capitol, Delaware, Wilkes-Barre and Worthington - Scranton campuses attended. Present from Capitol Campus were Ed Perrone, Carol Andress, Bill Kelly, Joy Edmondson and Peggy Hartzell. SPECIAL Middletown-The appointment of Ms. Laura Landman as assistant director of Project MAIN at Penn State-Capitol Campus has been announced by Dr. George D. Wolf, dean of faculty. MAIN stands for "mobiliza tion attainment of individual needs." The project focuses on training staff for work with the see page 6 ftlt t 'kfie The Press Association of Commonwealth Campuses Loraine Goodenough, Press Association President, opened the conference at 11:00 a.m. After consideration of sundry business matters (agreement to revise the Association's defunct constitution, discussion of the organization's three i told pur pose and evaluation a4d change of membership fee policy), Association members attended workshops in one of three areas: news writing, layout or advertising. Bill Campbell, Press Association Advisor, led the news writing workshop and then presented an informative and informal talk about the functions and uses of the Department of Public Information. Bill is the former Director of Public Information at Capitol Campus. He current '7B Capitolite Goes on Sale Subscriptions for Capitolite 1978 will be on sale in Vendorville onMonday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of next week during 2nd, 3rd, 4th and sth periods. The cost of a subscription is $7.50 or, a down payment of $2.50 can hold a book, with the balance of $5.00 due by February 15, 1978. Capitolite 1978 will consist of photographs of the college community with special emsis on the Fall, Winter, and Spring ly holds the position of Assistant Manager of the News 'Bureau, Office of Publications at University Park. The high point of the day was a presentation given by Ed Perrone, Carol Andress and Bill Kelly of Capitol Campus. Ed, Carol and Bill informed the newspaper staffs of the upcoming rally to 'be held at noon on Novembar 1,5 at the Capitol in Harrisbutte t 'Pa. They urged media participation in spreading the word ; to their campuses and in rousing student and faculty. interest. The conference adjourned Saturday at 4:15 p.m. with a tour of University Park's newspaper, The Daily Collegian. The Press Association will meet again Winter Term. graduates.
