Would you like to spend a week away from it all? Quietly paddling a canoe along forested shores or ex ploring the proposed Tracy Ridge Wilderness area of the Allegheny National Forest? Would you like to spend evenings around a campfire discussing the ecosystem and the need for man to live in harmony with it? ARTS AND HUMANITIES 198 A: THE WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE provides the way. Offered at Behrend College for the first time this summer, this course may be taken either as part of a fulltime load or as a single course. The course provides the student with an understanding of how the close proximity of wilderness has affected American development and the individual American's perception of himself through examination of the literature, philosophy, and natural history surrounding the American wilderness. The course format requires enrollment by May 18th to permit students to complete the in dependent reading which is required as the first phase of the program. The second phase is a seven day—six night field ex pedition, June 10-16th, into the Allegheny National Forest. During this portion of the course, backpacking, canoeing, orien- Chapin Reviewed When I went into Erie Hall on Sunday, April 29th I saw a lot of friends. When Tom Chapin started to sing, I saw only him. Chapin's personality was almost as good as his voice - which was excellent. He sang songs with such feeling that he seemed to live each song. The best part of his concert, I thought, was when he had the audience bank keys, snap fingers and sing in harmony. As I watched Chapin sing and perform I could easily see how he kept children entertained through "Make A Wish," and adults entertained by "Everyday." He trancends time and age and he makes people feel great. Isn't that what a per former is supposed to do? The Student Senate and the S.U.B. should take a bow for bringing Tom Chapin to Behrend. It was definitely a wonderful and en tertainin: idea. teering, and nature study skills are developed. At this time the readings are discussed and ap plied to field conditions. Each student is instructed to keep a daily journal of reactions and perceptions in relationship to the reading material. The third phase consists of a written examination by which each student demonstrates his assimilation of the entire program. Participants should be in good health because of the ruggedness of the wilderness area and the physical demands of the field experience. Participants will not be in contact with civilization during this time. The instructors for the course are Dr. Larry Eckroat, Associate Proffessor of Biology, and Dr. Michael Simmons, Assocate Professor of English. Dr. Eckroat, an avid and ex perienced outdoorsman and camper both in Pennsylvania and the Rockies will assist students in developing nature study skills. Dr. Simmons, an outdoor writer and regional editor of The Pennsylvania Naturalist will lead campfire discussions of the readings. A basic list of necessary equipment is provided to each participant at registration. Major items of equipment which the student does not have will be furnished. Registration must be com pleted the week of May 14-18. Enrollment is limited to 14 students. Fee: The total fee of $345 for Pennsylvania undergraduate residents includes the three undergraduate credits, • tran sportation to and from the Allegheny National Fores, all food, required textbooks, camp sites, and camping equipment if needed. A $lOO deposit must be made at initial registration. The total $345 fee must be paid by June 1, 1979. Students selected for the field trip who withdraw after May 22nd will receive a refund only for that portion of the monies not commited. Those students at tending Behrend as full-time students for the summer term need pay only $216 in addition to regular tuition. • For additional information and registration, call Robert Schenker, Behrend College, 814- 898-1511, ext. 270.
