May 10, 1979 Successful Season Ends For Cubs The Behrend baseball team will end its season Saturday at Youngstown, finishing a suc cessful season. Their record, including two playoff losses to Mercyhurst on Tuesday, is currently at 11-7. For the second year in a row the Cubs earned a berth in the NAIA District 18 playoffs. Tuesday they met Mercyhurst for the right •to meet defending Champions Point Park, which last year placed fourth nationally. Behrend and Mercyhurst had earlier in the year split a doubleheader, but the host Cubs were not so fortunate Tuesday, losing games by scores of 17-6 and 2-1, the second a ten inning affair. In the first game Behrend pitchers had control problems early on, giving up many walks and at other times pitching high in the strike zone where the Laker batters could muscle up. The big early lead for Mer cyhursl, seven runs in the first inning, allowed them to be loose at the plate and to hit relievers with confidence. The Lakers collected nineteen hits in the Opener. In the second game Behrend got off to an early lead in the third on Steve Shellenburger's walk, Bob Mixon's sacrifice, and Dave Simon's single. John Greulich, who pitched a fine game, held the Lakers off until the eighth inning, when Mercyhurst scored a run. Bill Strain pitched from the eighth until the tenth, when Mercyhurst scored the winning run and earned the chance to meet Point Park. While the outcome was disappointing for Cub fans, it should not take much glow off of a Tennis Netters Defeat And Get Defeated Last Tuesday Behrend's tennis team defeated Grove City by a score of 6-3. Grove City had had a record of 6-1 before meeting , the Cubs. The victory raised the Behrend netters record to 4-6. Behrend gained victories from Mark Baginski, Gary Gasperich, Jim Brennan, Bill O'Brien, all in singles. Gasperich and O'Brien both won in three sets: Steve Pappas lost a tough match at number two singles, losing 7-6, 7- 6. Jeff Hockersmith lost by default in the third set when he was forced to retire due to an injury. He was leading 4-1 when he was forced to withdraw. Baginski and Gasperich con tinued their fine season at first doubles, winning 6-0, 6-2. O'Brien and Sawyer lost 7-5 and 6-4 at number two, but Pappas and Brennan came back at third doubles to win in three sets 7-6, 3- 6, 6-3. Last Saturday Behrend lost a tough match to Cleveland State by a score of 5-4. Steve Pappas was unable to play in - that match, which weakened the team, though Coach Avallone said that the team could have played better, esepecially in certain critical spots. In that match the Cubs got victories from Baginski and Gasperich, the latter moved up to number two singles to replace Pappas. In doubles Baginski and Gasperich won, using a 5-4 tiebreaker in the second set to earn the victory. O'Brien and Sawyer won in three sets, 6-1 in the third, to nail down the win at number three doubles. The tennis team. rnee4 WeStmhistei Thuisday prior' to very fine season, much better than was anticipated. Coach Stoner was quite pleased with the overall performance of the Cubs. Coach Stoner feels that Gerry Simon has a very good chance to wind up as a District all-star. A good fielding catcher, Simon also hit well into the .400's for the season. With all of the good young talent on the team, next year could be even better. The D-18 tourney will be very tough, with Mercyhurst and Edinboro, pernennial tennis powerhouses, making it difficult for Behrend net t ers to break through. According to Avallone, our best hopes rest with Mark Baginski at number one singles and with Baginski and Gary Gasperich at number one doubles. Coach Avallone has submitted his resignation, and the Cubs will be looking for a new leader for next year.
