Titled DNA is here to stay: Clinical Applications of the “New Genetics," it was a combination of the newest technologies in the genetics field. Michele Clemens, MS, pediatric geneticist at Magee Women’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, gave a brief overview of genetics. Clemens discussed the basic genetics, such as the distribution of genes in chromosomes. She also explained how bands of genes ate arranged on chromosomes. One of Clemens’ co-workers from Magee, Dr. Elizabeth McPherson, addressed the usage of DNA testing to find common disorders. One of these disorders is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which attacks primarily males from birth. Another genetically transmitted disease is cystic fibrosis, a dreaded ailment which causes chronic lung infection and pancreatic insufficiency, this generally affects people of Western European descent Thursday, October 3, 1996 Myotonic Dystrophy, a disease which is diagnosed with a DNA test, causes muscle weakness and cataracts, the onslaught of the disease happens usually in the 30’s to 40’s.. McPherson said that, “We can use this [DNA testing] for prenatal diagnosis.” This is a new problem in prenatal care. What are parents to do when they find that their child may die at or shortly after birth? The final speaker was Dr. John Robertson, a crime lab manager for the Pennsylvania State Police Erie Regional Crime Lab. Robertson spoke about the growth of forensic genetic technology. He discussed the usage of these techniques in rape and homicide cases. He spoke of the benefits of this technology, being that it provides greater statistics and stability, versus the drawbacks, which includes the problem of time, this can take up to two months, and the fact that it is very expensive. This new technology can offer many benefits, but we must keep in mind we arc dealing with very fundamental to human life; so fundamental that changing it can create irreparable damage.
