Thursday, September 26, 1996 Don’t disregard Wink By Joe Ryan Collegian Staff A band of local college students and graduates. Wink has made a name playing the clubs of Erie. With sounds ranging from today’s alternative sub-culture to that of such 80’s legends as Depechc Mode, the music is very catchy and the lyrics decorous. Their sound is much like that of the Counting Crows. David Cox, the band’s leader and vocalist, is a student at Gannon by day .and writes all the lyrics. His lyrics are very thoughtful and insightive, unfortunately, a lot is lost with his singing. His voice gives a great first impression but it is quickly lost as his lack of depth and limited range are quickly apparent Mike Diluzio makes up for the vocals with a powerful performance on lead guitar. His musical range expands through sound similar to Depeche Mode on “Uh-umm” and modern alternative and ska on tracks such as “Alignment,” and “PLT.” His influences are mostly classic rockers such as Dream Theatre and Rush. The influences are apparent as he powers his way gracefully through the tracks. The other surprise of the band is drummer Rick Martin. Martin received his training at Dana’s School of Music and at Youngstown State University. His influences include such diverse musical styling as Tracy Chapman, PJ Harvey and Devo. ClockwlM from lower left-hand corner the members of WINK: Shawn Hunsberger, Michael DiLuzio, Mark Murphy and Rick Martin Murphy (Behrend student) on bass complete the sound with noteworthy performances. Hunsberger, from Turtle Creek, has been playing guitar for over 10 years. His influences include such modem talents as Smashing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, and the rock of Iron Maiden. Mark Murphy has been playing bass for seven years and said he is the most influenced by the Grateful Dead and Classic rock. The wailing riffs and pure finger plucking mastery of Wink arc omnipresent in the styling of the band. The sounds would work equally well in Seattle, New York, Los Angles, or my native Boston. I feel the band has a lot of talent and that the thing that may require wotk is the lead vocals. Wink’s first CD, titled disregard , is due out at the end of the month or call Rocket 101 for more information (725-9101). I definitely suggest this for anyone’s collection; you can pick up Wink's new release at Barnes & Noble, Disc-Go-Round, Eerie Records, Media Play or the Penn State Bookstore on campus. together 38 Yokum’s creator 39 “The Morning Watch" writer 40 Pay heed 41 Recognized 44 Mound stat. 45 “You Lonesome Tonight?" 46 Cacophony 47 This due, appropriately GEORGE by MARK S: BUTCH AND DOUGH R.FD.
