Page 10 Baseball opens with win by Brian Stadler Collegian Staff The Behrend baseball team opened its 1995 season with a bang, sweeping a doubleheader from host Thiel College by scores of 3-2 and 7-5. In the first game the Lions wasted no time jumping on top of Thiel. They scored a run in each of the first two innings with sophomore third baseman, John Matson, singling in one of the two runs. But errors plagued the Lions and Thiel tied the score at two in the bottom of the 6th inning. The two teams failed to score in the 7th inning, and in the top of the Bth, Quinn McGuire scored the winning run on a fielding error by Thiel. Head Coach Dan Perritano was pleased with his team's performance in the opening game. The Penn State Nittany Lions continued their quest for a NIT championship with a 65-59 victory over Nebraska Tuesday night. Penn State's victory at Nebraska marks the first non conference loss for the Huskers' since Texas beat them in 1992. Rashaan Carlton led the Lions with a season high 19 points. Dan Earl added 14 points and seven assists. Senior center John Amaechi had another consistant game with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Mikki Moore led Nebraska with 15 points, all in the second half. Jaron Boone added 11 points. Penn State shot 42 percent from the field compared to Nebraska's 46 percent. But Penn State out-rebounded the Huskers 39-29. Penn State shot very well from three point land, hitting 12 "It was a good start, we go the pitching performance we needed and produced runs when we had to. We could have caved in when they (Thiel) tied it but we didn't,"explained Perritano. Greg Gapen went the distance for the Lions allowing only two unearned and striking out eight batters. Offensively, Matson led the Lions with two hits, one run scored and an RBI. McGuire, and sophomore Fred Veith also added a single a piece. While the bats were silent, for the most part, in the first game they came alive in the second game. Thiel scored first, in the first inning, but that would be their only lead of the day. The Lions strung seven runs together in the next three innings and led 7-3 after five innings. Carlton was estatic about the Lions win Tuesday night. "Its a great win for the program. We're just going to try to keep on winning and keep the season going," stated Carlton. Head Coach Bruce Parkhill was very pleased with the effort of his club. "(Tonights game) was very similar to the Miami game. Nebraska did a great job jumping out to a big lead at the begining of the second half. They had the momentum, they had the crowd, but the guys dug deep and found a way to get back in it. I though Dan Earl played great. Obvisouly Rashaan Carlton came in and gave us a big lift, and John Amaechi and Phil Williams did a great job on the boards," explained Parkhill. Tonight• the Nittany Lions travel to lowa City to take on the lowa Hawkeyes at Carve Hawkeye Arena. The Lions defeated the Hawkeyes 74-64 at Hawkeye Arena, Feb. 4. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. Sports each of the last two innings. Winning pitcher, Bob McLaren, also pitched seven strong innings and went the distance. He allowed 10 hits and five runs, but only three of the runs were earned. McLaren also struck out eight and walked four. McLaren felt the sweep of Theil is something the Lions can build on to have a succesful season. "These games gave us confidence that we can win and gave us some experience. We hit the ball hard the second game and played a good game." He continued, "We do need to be more consistent," stated McLaren. Those remarks were reiterated by Coach Perritano. "We are going to have to be more consistent at the plate and our defense needs to be consistent." For the Lions McGuire, Tom Gardner, Bob Vadala, and J.J. Stickney all had two hits each. McGuire also scoring two runs and driving in a run. Gardner and Vadala also drove in two runs each. The Lions won't have to wait long to get back into action as they will be playing today against a very powerful Ohio Weselyn outfit in the Capital University tournament. Ohio Weselyn is 8-2 with the two losses coming to Division H ballclubs. After that doubleheader, they will play six more games in three days. Gardner, first baseman of the Behrend baseball team, had a single, double, scored two runs, and stole two bases in the Lions doubleheader sweep of Thiel last week. Head coach Dan Perritano commented on Gardner's performance early in the season, "He's off to a good start, he plays hard, runs the bases well, and that is part of the reason why we are 2-0." Coach Perritano enjoys coaching Gardner, he says, "Tom is an all around player, he brings the competitive spirit to the game and the team. He leads by example, and he has the desire and loves to play the game of baseball." Gardner considers himself a team player. "It's nice to have good stats, but moving runners over and sacrificing for the team is important to me. I will do anything to make the team improve,"commented Gardner. Gardner's the type of player that hits for a high average and has good speed. His personal goal this season he said is "to hit .400 again like last year, steal between 25 to 30 bases, and drive in 20 runs." If these goals work out for Gardner and the Lions, the team should have a successful season. Gardner commented on Behrend's outlook this season.
