The Behrend baseball team
opened its 1995 season with a
bang, sweeping a doubleheader
from host Thiel College by
scores of 3-2 and 7-5.
In the first game the Lions
wasted no time jumping on top
of Thiel. They scored a run in
each of the first two innings with
sophomore third baseman, John
Matson, singling in one of the
two runs. But errors plagued the
Lions and Thiel tied the score at
two in the bottom of the 6th
inning.
The two teams failed to score
in the 7th inning, and in the top
of the Bth, Quinn McGuire scored
the winning run on a fielding
error by Thiel.
Head Coach Dan Perritano was
pleased with his team's
performance in the opening
game.

Lions overcome Nebraska
Huskers lose 65-59
by Nick Zulovich
Assistant Sports Editor
This was supposed to be the
big matchup in football, but this
matchup was on the basketball
court. The Penn State Nittany
Lions continued their quest for a
NIT championship with a 65-59
victory over Nebraska Tuesday
night.
Penn State's victory at
Nebraska marks the first non
conference loss for the Huskers'
since Texas beat them in 1992.
Rashaan Carlton led the Lions
with a season high 19 points.
Dan Earl added 14 points and
seven assists. Senior center John
Amaechi had another consistant
game with 12 points and 10
rebounds.
Mikki Moore led Nebraska
with 15 points, all in the second
half. Jaron Boone added 11
points.
Penn State shot 42 percent
from the field compared to
Nebraska's 46 percent. But Penn
State out-rebounded the Huskers
39-29. Penn State shot very well
from three point land, hitting 12
"It was a good start, we go the
pitching performance we needed
and produced runs when we had
to. We could have caved in when
they (Thiel) tied it but we
didn't,"explained Perritano.
Greg Gapen went the distance
for the Lions allowing only two
unearned and striking out eight
batters.
Offensively, Matson led the
Lions with two hits, one run
scored and an RBI. McGuire, and
sophomore Fred Veith also added
a single a piece.
While the bats were silent, for
the most part, in the first game
they came alive in the second
game. Thiel scored first, in the
first inning, but that would be
their only lead of the day.
The Lions strung seven runs
together in the next three innings
and led 7-3 after five innings.
Thiel put a modest comeback
effort together scoring a run in

Carlton was estatic about the
Lions win Tuesday night.
"Its a great win for the
program. We're just going to try
to keep on winning and keep the
season going," stated Carlton.
Head Coach Bruce Parkhill was
very pleased with the effort of his
club.
"(Tonights game) was very
similar to the Miami game.
Nebraska did a great job jumping
out to a big lead at the begining
of the second half. They had the
momentum, they had the crowd,
but the guys dug deep and found a
way to get back in it. I though
Dan Earl played great.
Obvisouly Rashaan Carlton came
in and gave us a big lift, and
John Amaechi and Phil Williams
did a great job on the boards,"
explained Parkhill.

Winning pitcher, Bob
McLaren, also pitched seven
strong innings and went the
distance. He allowed 10 hits and
five runs, but only three of the
runs were earned. McLaren also
struck out eight and walked four.
McLaren felt the sweep of
Theil is something the Lions can
build on to have a succesful
season.
"These games gave us
confidence that we can win and
gave us some experience. We hit
the ball hard the second game and
played a good game." He
continued, "We do need to be
more consistent," stated
McLaren.
Those remarks were reiterated
by Coach Perritano.
"We are going to have to be
more consistent at the plate and
our defense needs to be
consistent." For the Lions
McGuire, Tom Gardner, Bob
Vadala, and J.J. Stickney all had
two hits each. McGuire also
scoring two runs and driving in a
run. Gardner and Vadala also
drove in two runs each.
The Lions won't have to wait
long to get back into action as
they will be playing today
against a very powerful Ohio
Weselyn outfit in the Capital
University tournament. Ohio
Weselyn is 8-2 with the two
losses coming to Division H

First baseman

by Josh Lucas
Collegian Siaff
Tom Gardner, a senior
Communications major, is this
week's Housing & Food Services
Athlete of the week.
Gardner, first baseman of the
Behrend baseball team, had a
single, double, scored two runs,
and stole two bases in the Lions
doubleheader sweep of Thiel last
week.
Head coach Dan Perritano
commented on Gardner's
performance early in the season,
"He's off to a good start, he plays
hard, runs the bases well, and that
is part of the reason why we are
2-0."
Coach Perritano enjoys
coaching Gardner, he says, "Tom
is an all around player, he brings
the competitive spirit to the
game and the team. He leads by
example, and he has the desire
and loves to play the game of
baseball."
Gardner considers himself a
team player.
"It's nice to have good stats,
but moving runners over and
sacrificing for the team is
important to me. I will do
anything to make the team
improve,"commented Gardner.
Gardner's the type of player
that hits for a high average and
has good speed.
"My knowledge of the game
helps brings leadership to the
team," stated Gardner.

ATW: Senior Tom Gardner
Gardner grew up as a Los
Angeles Dodger fan and has been
playing baseball since he was
eight years old. His personal
goal this season he said is "to hit
.400 again like last year, steal
between 25 to 30 bases, and drive
in 20 runs."
If these goals work out for
Gardner and the Lions, the team
should have a successful season.
Gardner commented on
Behrend's outlook this season.
"Originally we want to finish
.500 or better," he said, "twenty
wins is what were shooting for
now."
