This was the second drive of the school year. Students donated blood in the Wintergarden in the Reed Building from 10 a.m. til 4 p.m. Donations were slow because of the nice weather, but the Blood Bank representative felt that the goal of 50 pints was realistic. Sandi Bowler, a 4th semester student, said that she was giving blood as a service project and that she felt good about giving blood. Another student, Tom Calloway, figured that he had enough blood to share and he liked the idea of helping others. After the blood is collected by the Blood Bank members, it is sent to the Blood Bank's lab. Technicians at the lab separate the blood in a centrifuge. They collect plasma, platelets, and red blood cells from each unit a blood for for use in component therapy. Patients are given what ever component they need.
